Great deal on that little XL! What did the SL end up selling for, if you don't mind me asking. My buddy has an almost fully restored bike, and he has no idea how much to ask..

Greggo, I sold the SL as is with the broken kick start so I am not a good price match,, but I did get 650 for it needing the repair. 2500 is not out of line for your friends, check the nada book value...Larry

Several ages behind and no internet at home for months so I open the last couple pages in tabs at the bar and catches up at home. What happened with the SL? Maybe I will find out when I catch up on this one

The SL self-destructed on th last test ride I was going to do before I put it on the market, the kick start assembly and gears broke

. I sold it as is, made a little bit of money but not the 1000 I was planning on

. It would have been a somewhat simple fix but I was so disappointed I just wanted the bike gone. I now have an XL125 KO and all the other bikes in my signature...Larry

Bringing this one back to life. Photo-ucket has robbed the photos but I raise this back to life to ask if the shop is a pleasure to have as well as that nice house. Imagine it looks great as the last photos I recall were great.

How is the Lp setup in the shop working? Do you drape drop cloths over the album collection and stero equipment when not in use and to protect it if you are having lots of dust flying? If not, you should open up the stereo equipment cases and blow out all the dust and give them a good cleaning and make some covers or drop cloths to minimize damage from dus. The covers will really make a difference.

I imagine you are happy with the house, I know I would be, and the shop is really a great space to have.

Thanks David, the property has come a long way. I have redone most everything in the house and barn. Post up new photos later today or tomorrow using the forum method. Hope all is well with you and your family

Since David rethreaded this thread I 'll turn it into a blog. Here it is 5 years since settlement and I've accomplished quite a few repairs on the house and many bike restorations. Plan to keep this updated so I can keep track of "What's going on" (apologies to Marvin Gaye) and I'll be using the forum method of attaching photos so all don't go the way of photophucket.

I have a double master bedroom each room being about 14 x 16 with a door connecting the two. The house was built 1905 so I am attempting to make it look as though one walked back in time (save for the vintage stereo equipment of course). All furniture needed to be period correct, most all pieces were purchased at auctions for peanuts(in this room the bed cost 80, the oriental rug 20, the other pieces I had). Stereo cabinet is built from one of the original kitchen counters which was in a shed.

Receiver is a Technics SA-800 at a cost of 125, Garrard Type A turntable cost 2, Sansui S-815 speakers were less than 20, Pioneeer PD-F908 100 cd player cost 20, the other two turntables cost less than 2 for both

. I bought belts and both came back to life. It is one of 4 systems I have, sound is awesome BTW.

There will be a lot of parenthetical inserts as my mind constantly wanders to different subjects. I've also been called the king of non sequiturs by many of my fellow workers.

I can't understand these kids today that are happy to have their phone plugged into some little Iphone port and think it sounds good.

Pertaining to the old stuff, I just completed the finish of my bare basement. I dusted off the stereo equipment from mid-70's and plugged it in. My Marantz 2325 needs a good servicing/cleaning. The Teac 4300 works great for the most part. My Altec monitors kick ass as always BUT..... my EPI 100 speakers succumbed to father time. The woofer foam had disintegrated but everything else seemed intact. After buying an overhaul kit $320 for the first pair that consisted of 2 new speakers for both cabinets and the crossovers too (sounds fantastic) my neighbor turned me on to SimplySpeakers.com. I ordered their repair kit for $25. It consists of 2 new foam pieces and the correct glue. Online instructions took the fear away from attempting this. It's easy and an effective way to bring back old speakers from the dead provided that just the foam has issues.

Thanks for the tip Jerry. I am fortunate that all my speakers(DCM, McIntosh, KLH, Bose and Jensen are all good to go). Is the Teac 4300 reel to reel? I had a Sony and Akai but all my tapes went bad so I am without reel to reel...Larry

Most of the equipment I've found recently has come from auctions, either estate or regular. With speakers one can usually buy on the cheap, just check the cones before hand. I'll post up photos of the other stuff as I go along

Yeah, the Teac 4300 is a reel to reel. Nice piece of equipment. I have many albums recorded from 'back in the day'. I need to fire up my Pioneer 8 track recorder next.

I had an entire recording set: reel to reel, cassette and 8-track. All my reels went bad, either stretched or lost magnetism(not sure but all the reels I recorded in the 60's were mostly unplayable. I lost an awful lot of great music

. I had recorded quite a bit of live radio concerts, i.e. Billy Joel's first live radio concert on WMMR Philly, David Bromberg and Phoebe Snow live same source, New Riders but not sure of the source. Guess this should be in the pissed off thread, right?

I sold the reel to reels on ebay for a nice chunk of change...Larry

I love those pics Larry, looks like a great place to live! Back in the 1970's one of my "Barrack Room Neighbours" was "Shorty" Miller, a Vietnam veteran Infantry corporal who was working as the librarian at the School of Signals.

Shorty was a great guy, in hindsight I think he probably had PTSD as he had no other friends that I can think of, he didn't have a car and he only left his room for work and meals, but he had an amazing stereo set-up in his barrack room. (these rooms had space for 4 beds, but "staff members" like Shorty and I were allowed a room to ourselves, so quite spacious)

He had a couple of Akai reel to reels, amplifiers, and a truck load of speakers around the room. He rarely cranked it up as he didn't want to bother the other guys, but the sound, even at "Neighbourly" levels, was amazing. Cheers, Terry.

^^^Terry, When I was in the service many of my fellow airmen had amazing systems they purchased overseas. Like yours every room was fitted for 4 men but we were two to a room(guess because we were highly trained imbeciles). I assembled my amplifier from a kit but many had super systems that came from Viet Nam. I bought the Sansui speakers because of all the systems I heard back then the Sansui's were the best...LBB

The Akai reel-to-reels weren't sold in the US back then; they were re-branded as Roberts, but the same machine. We had one, and my dad sold and serviced them, and lots of returning soldiers brought home Akai recorders. I have a tape somewhere of Led Zep II, recorded from the first play of the vinyl on an Empire turntable.

A good friend in Phoenix is into high end audio with eclectic tastes. He has a set of Magna Planars and a listening room full of albumns, mostly old old rock, jazz, blues, classical, lots of solo stuff from 60s and 70 s.
The amps and preamps are tube audio and tuner is as well. He has had a few different turn tables...things that were a fortune new and still sell pretty high.
The Magna Planars are about 6 feet tall leaning back on their stands and they are about 24 inches wide and maybe 6 inches deep. They sound very very good.

He wanted to steal my building board for rc airplanes as I bought a 4x8 foot sheet of sound deadening board about 3/4" thick and I panted fron and back with rustoelum white from qt can because the oil paint had great coverage in one coat.

I kept 1/2 of it for the building surface and gave him the other two. He let me live with him for several months as I looked for and found work in Tucson. He was at Raytheon Missle Systems in Tucson at the time...playing rocket scientist...

The sound deadening panels were able to mute reflections to tune the room better to give him a fuller sound stage for listening

interesting about the Akai/Roberts, reel to reel was great too bad the tapes didn't hold up. I stored mine in a
basement but all were useless after 20+ years.

It was cool to be able to fit2 to 4 LP's on an 1800' tape dependent upon recording speed. We would swap LP's in the barracks so the source material was almost limitless. I

The problem with old reel to reel tape is it had a plastic coating on it that degraded over time so now when you try to use it, its gumminess transfers onto the playback or record head and scrapes off creating a thick build up on the head. It is cleaned off the head relatively easily but the tape is ruined. There are reported elaborate procedures to salvage these tapes but not really worth the trouble unless it was extremely valuable material. Tapes manufactured in the 1960's or earlier seem to be generally ok, but the stuff from the 70's and 80's is almost all totally useless now. Of course, proper storage is critical.
About 10 or 15 years ago it was extremely difficult to buy audio tape as every manufacturer had totally ceased production. Last I checked you can once again buy brand new 1/4, 1/2, and 1 inch tape with the renewed interest in analog audio, but it is quite expensive.

Larry, I'm sure you can identify with this situation, as it is totally analogous to the situation with real photagraphy versus digital.

LPs wear with every playing very very high end stuff has less negative impact that economy turn tables will have on the vinyl. The resurgence of vinyl has really revived the market and the machines are the same with better sensors and understanding of production process. The warm rich sound of vinyl has new life breathed into it.

MoMo, that is great work you have done. I love the arm chair, likely very comfortable. Imagine Shaker style furniture of high quality is plentiful if you know where to look.

It is nice sometimes to reflect on where we started and how things have progressed when things are good.

Surprisingly, cd's have not stood up to time nearly as well as audio tape. Many of the mass produced cd's used a clear finish that has degraded, ruining the laser's ability to pick up the data. CDR's are just terrible, I don't own any, more than ten years old, that even play. I have cassette tapes that I recorded in the early 1980's that sound exactly as they did the day I recorded them. Even a perfect, new, cd is easily scratched, causing annoying skips and drop outs where a scratched vinyl lp is mostly still playable and enjoyable to listen to.
