Painting fork uppers
« on: March 13, 2012, 07:18:01 PM »
Hello everybody

I have my forks off for rebuilding and the part of the forks that are under the fork ears are pretty rusted. I already bought different fork ears that won't cover up all the rust. So my question is can I paint this area or do I just get the rust cleaned off as best as possible and leave it like that. Thanks

You can't paint it, that part needs to be smooth and unpainted for the fork seals to slide over. Sounds like you need to have the rust removed and have them polished and rechromed.

You could always disassemble the forks and slip the seals over the bottom.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Oops, I thought he meant the area that the fork seals rubbed on. The area between the triple clamps might be able to be painted, but you will probably have trouble assembling them if you aren't careful.

I had mine painted for years before I could afford new(straight) tubes. :)

It probably wouldn't hurt to put on a nice light even 2 coat;1 coat primer & one top coat...after you've assembled the forks after rebuild w/ new seals installed.
I would plan on getting another set of tubes eventually.

They are about $150 a pair at CycleX
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Actually I just took the Emmy cloth to it and it cleaned up pretty good besides ones spot which I might be able to cover up. I do have another question though. In the manual it shows the damper being almost the same length as the fork tube but when I got mine out it is not even half the length of the tube. Am I looking at the manual wrong or do I have the wrong forks for a 550? I gotta go to the laptop to post the pic real quick.

Here is the pic of the tube and the damper. Also the fork bottoms have mounting spots for calipers on both of them. I thught that was weird considering it is only a single disc brake but i didnt know if they were all like that. So are these 550 forks or some other?

That looks fine to me. Yes they do have the extra caliper mount...tho mine doesn't. Someone must have changed it.
Mind you I cant really remember what the originals look like. I had to get the only fork tubes available to me, cut, drill and mix and match.
