Air assist forks on a 650
« on: April 09, 2012, 05:06:22 AM »
I checked the air pressure on my forks and they were at ZERO Lbs.  I had not checked it in a year so is this normal to have some leakage?.  The air assist improves the handling 100% and the pressure appears stable.

Yeah mate, most air assisted forks only ran around 6-10 PSI, so your fork seals only have to be a little bit worn and you'll lose all your air. They are good though, aren't they? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

If you don't want to deal with the air leakage you could always install a spacer (perhaps 3/4 inches tall) on top of each  fork spring to increase preload. Same effect as the air assist and easy to do.

Actually air does compress.  Spacers don't.  There is a bit of progressive stiffening with air, where spacers give you an always stiff spring rate.   Spacers are an option if you need to stiffen up sagging springs, but air assist does provide improved shock action over just spacers.   It does require well maintained seals.

Can the 650 forks be swapped onto a 550?
