You guys want to hear how dumb I am?
« on: April 05, 2012, 03:46:52 AM »
At the end of last season, I tore my 550 apart to rewire it and paint it over the winter.  Well, a few days after I tore it all apart, I had to have surgery due to my Crohns disease, so the bike sat all torn apart in the garage for several months while I took it easy on the couch.  Well, lately I've been working on it, and I got to the point a few weeks ago where I was ready to try and fire it up.  It started, but ran very poorly.  It wouldn't idle on it's own, seemed to have a pretty gnarly miss, and was backfiring terribly.  So I figured I'd replace my float needles and seats since they leaked anyways, and make sure the jets were clean.  Got all that done, fired it up, and it ran exactly the same.  So I inspected all my wiring to see if I screwed something up, and I've been racking my brain for the last few days trying to figure out WTF it could be.  Well last night, I found it.  Lets just say it helps to have your plug wires going to the right cylinders.  :o ??? :-\  Hahaha, I'm such a dummy, but at least I got it sorted out, and it runs great now.   8)

I wish I only felt stupid for a day!  I've been trying to figure this out for a few days now, working on it a bit at a time. It's funny how my mind works, I always attempt the most difficult repair first, instead of looking at the easy stuff.

At least you figured it out yourself. I had to take my freshly rebuilt engine to a shop to find out I had set my points to "T" instead of "F". they said I had it dead on though!!!  Talk about feeling stupid.

I wonder if that is why Honda puts number stickers on the plug wires...they know the bikes were coming to the states.  ;D Glad you got it figured out before it cost you any serious cash.

Where's the post of the guy who decided to oil and wipe his drive chain with the bike idling in first on the center stand?  I think he rides a Hondamatic now.

Still not as dumb as when you can't start the bike after going through everything,. You go through everything again, carbs off the bike, check ignition, set timing, check valves.....and the whole process again...still won't start

but

I fired up my lawn tractor for the first time this spring yesterday. Nothing unusual at first because it always has been reluctant to start after it's sat all winter so I just kept pulling on the starter rope ...... but nothings happening. Pulled the plug and cleaned it, shot some carb cleaner in the cyl and right when I was getting ready to pull again I just happened to notice I hadn't turned the ignition on. It fired right up on the first pull after that.  :o

I've done the same thing. The kill switch was off (I always leave it on, don't know how it turned off), and I sat there cranking and kicking til the battery was dead and I was sweating like a pig.

Oh yeah the kill switch that's another source of frustration especially with a neutral safety switch. I accidently hit it off once while at a stop light just as the light turned green. WHen you're panicked it's hard to first, find neutral, then remember to turn the kill switch back on, then hit the starter button all as fast as you can, all while there is a line of cars behind you. Fun stuff!
