#$%*ty deal, if it were me I'd wire wheel them down to bare metal. Repaint em with high heat and bake them, then see if I wanted to wrap them.

I bought my Mac from Niche Cycle thru their website (cheaper than their ebay listing) and had no problems with my painted exhaust(going on 2 years now). Alot of warranties have to go direct to the manufacturer nowadays. I'd call Mac again (remember to be nice/goes farther than being irate)

it is just painting a header.
Which will inevitably need to be redone, and redone, and redone; maybe he purchased without knowing this fact.  I'll never buy painted pipes for that reason, they never look as good as you would like, except for just after paint, and they always need "maintenance".

Maybe chrome or wrap is the way to go.

Headers get insanely hot. Touch one and see for yourself. I know of no paint that will endure it forever. As far as im concerned no one should be without a couple cans of bbq paint. I do it every year. Not too big a deal. Ceramic coat would last longer but be more expensive. I had one done and then had cracks develop which i attributed to its decreased abilty to disssipate the heat. Who knows though.

Will the wrap trap water if caught in the rain or while washing then start rusting under it out of site? Look up (Jet Hot) coating inside and out.
Drill some weep holes also.

I've used eastwoods stainless coating with OK results. The maniflds on my street rod have lasted over 20 years, they are turning darker now and could be re-done. It doesn't last as long on tube headers but better than paint. I baked the pipes by hanging them and inserting a propane torch into each tube.  Jet hot or nitroplate is almost indestructable, not cheap but a good product.

If your engine is running lean (stack will do that), the exhaust temp will be several hundred degrees hotter than what is normal.

They make heat guns for removing paint.

I've seen chromed exhaust headers glow red from excessive heat.  Paint won't endure that.  The chrome turned to straw color and then blue when cooled.

Did the paint blister on all pipes or just some?
Is it steel or paint under what is flaking off?

All flaking in some spot, steel underneath.

If you're gonna wrap them, spray a decent high heat clear on there first, after you get the old paint off.

Just checking.  Can you tell the difference between steel and grey paint?  You may have to scratch through the surface to actually be certain.

Anyway, it wouldn't be the first Mac set to be repainted with the wrong paint, or have been burned off with exhaust temps way too high.

More work to do...  (It never really ends.)

Definitely bare metal under there. Doesn't even look like it had another coat other than the black.

Well on the bright side it looks like removing the blistered paint will be easy, if you want it done right do it yourself I guess.

When I was 16 I had taken my CB450 engine out for some work and after getting it all back together and running for about 10 nimutes I thought I saw the headers vibrating as if I had not tightened them back properly. Soooo...I grabbed the chrome header to give it a bit of a shake to see if they were indeed loose. I touched one. I saw for myself. Not to be repeated for sure!

Self cleaning headers, why didn't I think of that?  :P

I read this thread exactly 10 minutes after ordering a black MAC header from Niche, so I may possibly get a self cleaning set as well. I plan to fab a Yosh type tail pipe for it, eliminating the MAC can. I've been hearing good things about John Deere muffler paint, and may try some on the pipe.
