***** Edit, Being in night school with a limited income and bills to pay, This bike as has been deemed Project "It ain't pretty but she runs" to be improved and renamed at a later date.  This means that the order of operations for parts acquisition will be:

Get it for free
Trade for it
Make it
buy it

That being said, it will be a safe (new tires, chain/sprockets, fork seals etc) and reasonable reliable (wear items purchased new) quasi-daily driver.  It just will look a little strange with some parts old and haggard looking and some fresh off the mill.  But it will be something that I can improve upon so that's good.  So with that out of the way, here's the thread as I originally started it.********

Hello all,

Picked up a '72 cb500 from a fella at work recently.  This was his bike back in the mid 70's.  He did a full cafe treatment to it then, rear sets, body work, lester mags, etc.  Then one day out on a ride he was at full lean in a turn and hit a fist sized rock, went down on the low side, flipped to high side... well you know how it goes from there.  He had this 6 gallon aluminum tank with about 5 gallons in it that just broke open like a split egg when it hit.  A shame 'cause that woulda been sweet.  Anyway, after the wreck he got freaked out, parked the 500 and bought a harley.

Fast forward 37 years and we were shootin the poop about bikes we've owned and what our first bike was.  Upon hearing that my first was a '72 500 and that I miss it have been looking for another one, he tells me about his and says come on by with a truck and it's mine.

That was several months ago now actually, but at the time I had way too much on my plate with work and night school.  So while I'm still working, and still in night school, I just had to make some progress.

Anyway, enough chitchat, here's some pics,

What it looked like when I went to pick it up,



He had the stock tank in pristine condition, been sitting in a shed since 1975 with very light surface rust on the inside and not a dent on the outside.  He had the stock front wheel still in good shape, but no rear wheel except for a 16" spoked rim that I don't think was original.

Here's a pic of the seat which I like.  Since the frame has already been modded for it, it's easy to keep and it wasn't damaged in the crash.  Even has the original small tail light mounted.



As you can see in the first pic, the PO started to rebuild the engine, or do something with the engine anyway.  He pulled the valve train apart and, unfortunately, left it apart for the last 35 years so the entire valve train is a very uniform rusty brown >:(  and beyond salvation.  I figured that meant that the motor had to be toast as well, but when I pulled the head off, the cylinder walls were actually quite pristine... aside from the mud dauber wasp nests of course  ;)



So I stripped the bike to try and clean the frame up some since it's waaaay dirty and has rust in places.  If I had the money for a strip and powdercoat, I'd do that, but since I don't I'll just wire brush and rattle can the piss out of it.  This thing is destined to be a working bike so I'm not overly concerned with shiny cosmetics.  If I try and go that route, it will never get finished.

The front end was a train wreck.  Severely rusted and not salvageable. 



Rather than spend money I don't have on a new front end, I opted to graft on this mid 90's CBR front end I happened have in my closet.  What doesn't everybody keep spare motorcycle front ends next to their wedding/funeral suit?



I did a test fit and the stem on the triple tree is compatible with the frame.  It will just be a matter of fitting some sort of bearing setup that works.  The CB bearings are a mm or two smaller in diameter than the CBR's.  I'm going to try and find some tapered roller bearings that will fit the bill.  If I can't, then I'll do what others have done and grind of the weld for each stem, press out and swap since i know I can get bearings for the CB setup.

That leaves the front wheel.  I don't like the look of mags, I much prefer spokes.  If I did I'd have kept the Lesters.  I did some investigation and found that the CBR and CB share the same bolt pattern for the rotors.  The CBR rotor however, fits onto a hub that is 2 or 3mm bigger in diameter than the CB.  So I'll be making an adapter to fit the CBR rotors on the the CB hub.  So that just leaves centering the wheel and spacing the calipers to fit.

Here's a pic of the axle and the tester adapter.  This one is made out of bronze (I just happened to have an appropriately sized piece around) but I'll likely make the real one out of aluminum.



Sadly, I'm missing the speedo housing on the wheel so I can't measure for the axle spacers yet.  Once I find one of those, I'll figure out what size of spacers I need and make those.

So that's the progress so far.

Next step is to make this a rolling chassis.  To do that, I need to pick up some items:

I found a rear wheel from a '77 at a local shop, but it had no brake hub.  I thought the one from the 16" wheel would work, but the wa wa trombones say otherwise.  So I'll be needing that.

Also need a rear axle, or at least the appropriate spacer(s) from a '77 to complete the rear.

I need to get that speedo housing for the front, then measure the hub thickness compared to the fork spread to come up with the spacer sizes I'll need to make.

That should get me rolling.  Next up will be to make some clip-ons.  I have a few ideas so I'll muddle those out and decide on something.  After that it will be wiring.  The harness is in pretty bad shape so I'll see what is salvageable and replace what isn't.

Well that's enough typing for now, my fingers are tired.

Welcome back to the forum there Neighbor!  Can't wait to clean up those Lesters and put them on my 500!

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Hey Greggo!

Sorry for disappearing there, I've been busier then a one legged man at and ass kicking contest and really haven't touched the bike in months.  I've been reading posts to get me motivated again and it's working. 

I've decided to run the swing arm I've got, but if you still have those shocks around, I'm still interested in those.  But as usual, money is still short so I'll see how I'm looking on payday.

Friday I'm going to see about doing a little work on my clip-ons.  I'm thinking about integrating some controls into them (starter, kill, blinkers, horn, headlight)  But that might be a bit too ambitious.  While I have the know-how, I don't have unlimited access to a shop, just what I can squeeze in during down-time at my buddy's shop, so we'll see.

Well, I'm really just thinking out loud here, so more when I got more.

Lostinthe- I prolly have the rear brake and axle stuff you need. Also, It's First Friday. Old bikes and cars at the 1/4 Pound Giant Burger at 22nd & Telegraph tonight. I'll be riding the cb500 chopper about 8.

Aight, so the semester is over and I was able to put a bit of time in on the bike.  Mostly I did a more complete inventory, some cleaning, and some work.

Mostly what I need are consumables and rebuild kits, just like every other old bike project.

So I mentioned earlier that I scored a motor off of CL that I was going to attempt to run.  The guy I bought it from said it was a working motor.  It didn't have a kick starter lever on it when I went to check it out, but the chain was still on and with the trans IN GEAR I was able to spin the chain by hand so I figured something was busted and offered him 30 bucks for it as parts.

After getting it home and poking around with the clutch I found what was going on, a completely fragged clutch,



I was sort of planning on having to get a clutch, just 'cause they get abused in these poor power:weight bikes but I was hoping to be able to put it off awhile.  But It did enable me to get the motor for cheap so that's good and I have enough extra plates and discs from the 500's engine just to see if and how the engine runs.

As for the engine's health otherwise, I'm hopeful.  I haven't checked the valve lash yet, but the motor seems to have decent compression and while the plugs had this kind of odd greenish tint to them I haven't seen before and it was running too lean (probably incorrect jetting/needle position for whatever the exhaust setup was) they were all even in color and wear which I take to be a positive sign.

You can kind of see the color here but not very well unfortunately,



It's got a very spanky new-looking oil pump on it.  Not sure if that's a good sign or a bad one.



Digging around in a box of parts I brought with me from DC when I moved I came across a gauge mount I made for another project that I didn't end up using.  I'm thinking about trying it out on this bike.  I was always excited about the jolly roger for the kill switch symbol, that was fun.



Dunno though, this one is kind of big and I'd still have to build some sort of enclosure so that all the wires and switch backs are not exposed.  I still have my drawings of it so I may come up with a smaller version.  Sadly I don't have access to the laser cuter I used to make this any longer so I'd have to go another route.

Well that's about it for today.  This weekend I'll be making another big push.  I got a buddy who's got some parts for me for which I'll be swapping some stuff I have got and we're gonna get our wrench on so I hope to get a good ways down electrical avenue.

I read with interest in your other thread that you are using spoked wheels, you do realize that the mag wheels you have {lesters} are in the rarer 19 front and 18 rear, they are quite sought after wheels , the 18 inch rear especially, i have seen them go for stupid money on flea bay.... They look great on a clean bike.....just saying... ;)

I know and I did think about it for a few minutes.  I actually had a 550 with lesters on it some 15 years ago and they really weren't my style then either.  I also know they are worth a pretty penny.  I sold them for what I thought was a fair price which was too low, but they went to a good home, I got some parts and paid some bills so I'm sleepin' easy.


In other news, adjusted the valves last night and started laying out the wiring.  Got side tracked by a buddy's bike ('76 750) that has a mysterious voltage drop in the headlight circuit.  Spent a bunch of time chasing leads around.  Pretty much narrowed it down to the right hand control switch but ran out of light before we could finish up.

Nothing pic worthy, but I did notice that the plugs the PO had installed were D7ES.  Anyone know if they are hotter or colder than stock D7EA's?

Hey Gregg!  Yeah, I'm still thinking about those shocks.  I need some, I've just been so low on funds but I'll get at 'em pretty soon here if you still have them around.  One thing I need if you happen to have it is the right-hand, upper rear motor mount from a 550, the one that has the hanger for the clutch cable.  I've got that 550 motor in the bike but I only have the 500 mount with no hanger.  I can rig something up, but if you have it handy I'd be down.

Got some parts from Mike (GeminiMotors) cool dude, awesome bikes and great shop!

I've got that bracket...it's yours ;)  I sold those shorty shocks I think you're talking about, but I have some good looking stockers with black springs if you want for like $20?

Willy, I have the engine mount down here in Berkeley, but I won't have the shocks until I go back to Cotati on Monday.. I'll have 'em for you next week.
