DANGIT! I broke the clutch lifter.....
« on: April 04, 2012, 03:23:44 PM »
74 CB 750 K4, Stock....
I read about 7,987 times to be careful tightening the lifter bolts, 1 complete turn until snug then 1/4 turns to torque (6 to 8 Ft/lbs).... I followed the instructions to a "T" .... However my torque wrench got the better of me >:( >:( >:(

I have one of those twisty handle torque wrenches....
The first graduation on the "Rough" side of torque wrench is 10 ft/lbs.... The "Fine" adjustment goes from ZERO to 9.. Simple right? not for this numbskull...... :o

I set the rough adjustment at Zero, the fine adjustment at 6. Dialed in at 6 ft/lbs... Off I go....

1/4 turn, next bolt, 1/4 turn, next bolt, 1/4 turn, next bolt, 1/4 turn, next bolt, 1/4 turn, next bolt, 1/4 turn, next bolt, 1/4 turn, next bolt, 1/4 turn, next bolt, 1/8 turn....**TINK**  :'(

After wiping my tears and apologizing to the dog yelling at him and blaming him... I tried the same torque value to a random 10mm bolt... No click click...WAY more than 6 lbs.  I dialed it UP to 16 Ft/lbs, tried the same random bolt and click click... DANGIT!!!!!

I should have known better than trusting a wrench that goes to 100+lb torque to a 6 lb setting.... DANGIT!

$50 bucks for a new lifter plate.... DANGIT!

My humble question...
Am I safe tearing into a junked (70ish to 77ish) Honda engine from the scrapyard and using that? Compatible????? Am I asking for more trouble by using a suspect part? If'n I do get a used one, or new one for that matter... Do I need to get a new bearing?..... DANGITl!

No animals were harmed during this rookie mistake......

My name is Phil .... I am an idiot.... "Hi Phil" ......

DANGIT
