750a locked up?
« on: April 04, 2012, 04:03:11 PM »
helping the neighbor get his 750a "unstuck" i do not know much about this model. does the motor have to be in neutral to kick start it? it has been sitting for close to 20 years in his garage and he wants to sell it. told him it would be more sellable if the motor would turn. we have poured kroil and mouse milk down the plug holes to help things along.
i have a 12 volt power supply we are going to hook up to the battery cables tomorrow to try and see where the gear selector is set.
yes i know even if he does get it turning best thing is a full rebiuld..havnt gotten that though his head yet. and the carbs are needing a going thru.
thanks for your help.
would like to getit myself..neat bike and deserves a good home!!

If the kickstand connection is in place, with it down, the bike is in neutral - but not like you think.

The bike can be kicked in gear.

The bike DOES NOT have gears like a normal bike - without any oil pressure, the engine is NOT mechanically connected to the sprocket - regardless of the gear shift position.  The gears are selected using oil pressure - and gear shift is actually an oil selector valve.  Oil pressure is applied to "clutch packs" like a cars automatic transmission.  No oil pressure, not in gear.
1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

Hook up the kick lever and try it. If you can move it, the engine is free. No point in rebuilding the engine or carbs to sell the bike, because that would cost more than he could ever sell it for, even in running condition...unless the rest of the bike is pristine.

the bike is not in perfect shape but not a basket case.
it will need an axhaust..holes rusted through.
paint on the tank is fadded but no rust holes.
shame is it only has 13k miles on it.
he wants 1500 bucks fo it but i dont have the heart to nicley tell him he is shall we say off his rocker.
he is just a dang nice old guy with and old bike that has alot of sentimental value to him.
all in all the bike is ok and worth restoring to the right person..me personally can only afford one project at a time.
beleive me i would love to talk him out of it for a cheaper price.
im a sucker for off the wall stuff like this 750a.
