Need quick carb help for cb500 (tonight please)
« on: April 04, 2012, 09:22:19 PM »
carb vents all flow, except for the 2 outside holes... are they supposed to flow or are they blocked off?

doesn't make sense for them not to flow, when the same holes in the inside carb do.

need responses asap, if possible... working on seventythreecb's bike here at my house and he's gotta work at 5am!!

Sort of looks like there is a plug in that hole, as well as in the opposite hole on the inboard carb?

There are 2 per carb, 2 inside carbs both of them flow

On the outside carbs, i can only get the inside holes to flow

As long as there are open vents, it shouldn't be a problem.

Since both outside carbs are the same, I'd guess that's how it was designed, and move on.. ;)

Those vents are what link the carbs together. The outside ones are plugged by Honda. Think of 4 people standing in a line and joining hands. The two on the outside need only use one hand to be joined in the group.
When I cleaned mine,a good amount of crap came out of the linked carbs,so I blew cleaner through them with the straw, let it settle for 15 minutes, and repeated as needed---then blew it out with air. Nice and clean now.

Thanks for the help guys... I kind of figured as much, but also thought they might just be plugged with crap too.  Obviously, they would only vent to the cylinder for the slide, but just wasn't sure.  Wanted to get every possible passageway open.

His carbs seemed to be pretty clear, i think his mains are a bit over jetted... he's running 115s and stock (via this forum) are 100s.  This could be a factor why he's not passing emissions.  But... he has a full year waiver, so I doubt he'll go test again, and HOPEFULLY the EPA will get off their ass and exempt bikes from this stupid emissions regulation we have here in Maricopa County, AZ!

He could really use a good new bank of carbs though.  His are pretty thrashed, lots of corrosion that you can see on the one, a chipped main jet tower, which might also be somewhat of a culprit, etc.  If you have carbs to sell for a good price, please let him or me know... much appreciated.
