Carb Boots
« on: March 18, 2012, 06:55:22 PM »
Ok so I have a 1980 cb650c with pd carbs and I am wondering what an alternative is for getting new carb boots for my bike instead of the $20+ ones. I think someone said the kawasaki ninja boots would fit and are cheaper, but not sure?....
Thanks

I too are looking for boots for my '81 Cb650C. Right now they are soaking in power steering stop leak fluid. I did a set for my CB550 and they became soft after a few weeks of soaking. You might try this method until you can locate new ones. I know they are hard to find at a good price.

New rubber is where it's at. Bite the bullet and get new ones. I did, and I'm glad I did.

I am going to get new ones, but someone said on a different post on here that the kawasaki ninja 900's boots are identical and you can get 4 of them for the price of one cb650's...just trying to confirm that otherwise here goes $100 down the drain...thank god I only paid $100 for the bike! ;)

how exactly is $80 going 'down the drain' if it makes things right again?

Technically its not, but if the ninja's would fit and work for $25, then I would save $55

Is this the bizzaro world? why on earth would you be looking for boots from a totally different bike to fit on a SOHC 650?

If everything is pretty much the same on them, the measurements and what not, then why not find a cheaper alternative? I cannot find the post I found on here not too long ago, some guy used different boots from a different bike in which I recall it was the ninja 900's boots, and he said they worked great. Being a college kid with a part time job hell I am gonna find the cheaper deal, as long as they work though. Just trying to confirm on here that the ninja 900's indeed work, otherwise I have no other choice to buy the originals.

if you're gonna try something cheap and futile, why don't you just get some rubber hose length and cut it to size?

I can make a fan belt from panty hose, doesn't mean it's a great idea.

These condemning comments about someone trying to find a viable alternative to an expensive part are what makes forums bad places to ask questions. Hopefully those posting them know don't understand that yet because posting them and knowing it would really be a shame.

Seriously, you may find compatible parts made for another bike. It is known that manufacturers will try use a commodity part produced by a company when they can. It is cheaper and easier to adapt a commodity part to your design than design a unique part and buy small runs of that part.

The trick is to figure out what parts were used between brands. I had a plastic starter button break on an old  Kawi, went to the dealer who had been around forever. I asked if he could get one, he said "sure everybody used them". When it came in it said "Genuine Yamaha". Of course it was the same button as the Kawi.
