No Holidays
« on: April 06, 2012, 03:16:15 AM »
Times sure have changed and not for the good :( When I started working at my current job (1986) We got all the regular holidays:
Christmas
Thanksgiven
July 4th
Easter-Good Friday and Eastern Monday
Hours- 8 to 5 M-F no Saturdays.

Now 25 years later- We only get Christmas day and Thanksgiven day.

Hours are M-F 7 to 7 and Sat 8 to 5. And there talking about maybe opening a half a day on Sunday.

Is your job the same way.

Company I work for gets the usual holidays of New Years, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Thursday and the Friday after, Christmas, a float holiday and birthday off. They used to close at noon on Fridays in summer, but that is gone now. If a holiday falls on a Thursday they always add the Friday too. I will not complain as they are good to us.

My company is good to us, too:  New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving + Friday after, Christmas Eve day, Christmas + 3 "floating" holidays to use at one's own discretion.

Company I worked for previously gave us those, plus MLK Day but only 2 "floating" days.

Those are the only two companies I've worked for, going back to 1988.

As for hours, I've always been in the Energy / Energy Service industry, so it operates 24/7/365.  My own personal hours (staff engineering stuff) have always been 40 ~ 45 hours a week M~F.  Exceptional situations could occur at any time.

Hey Dwight, sorry to hear of your state of affairs.
I am very lucky in that I get all the given holidays plus about 30 days annual holidays and the chance to do 10 hours overtime above my 40 regular hours each week which pays for my racing.
Almost all of my working life I have been self employed and have had to work all sorts of strange hours including Christmas day and all sorts of day and night shifts weekends included.
The one really sad thing is, now every thing is looking rosie for me, it's past retirment age and I'm about to pack it all in and put my feet up. Damn ;D

I still get the usual Holidays and 3 week Vacation. From the job I retired from I got 5 weeks vacation which you never got to take, and it was use it or lose it. If you took all your weeks they lost you. This place at least let's you cash out a week.

There has been a steady decline of workers rights and if you work for a company that still cares about your quality of life. You are lucky and need to appreciate them.
It used to be enough for everyone to make a good living and a reasonable profit for the owners. There seems to be a squeeze on the working class recently. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

#$%*, be glad you get paid holidays at all.
The best I can do here right now is contract work that allows for NO PAID VACATION, NO PAID HOLIDAYS.

And I am a civil engineer, be glad for what you have.

+1 Dukie I agree due to a new job then a couple of layoffs I have not had paid holidays or vacation for about 5 years. This year I finally broke through at my current job so I should actually get some vacation time.

It's all about perspective.  My work is open 364 days a year, and I have to be available to work anytime between 6am and Midnight.  I like it, though.  I'm on my feet most of the day, I get 5 weeks paid time off a year, and company-paid health insurance for my whole family.

Don't take what I posted the wrong way. Sure don't hate my job by any means, just was saying over a 25 year time frame a lot has changed. One being Holidays we once got we no longer do. Like anything you have to take the good with the bad. One of the good things that my job makes me be able to do is buy a couple of classic sohc4 CB's. ;D

I definitely get what you're saying.  I wasn't working 25 years ago (only 11 yrs old at the time), but I remember growing up when most retail businesses that weren't grocery stores were closed on Sunday and had short hours on Saturday, and no office-type businesses were open on weekends.  My older brother and sister learned how to drive in the mall parking lot on Sundays because it was closed.  Go by any mall on Sunday now and the parking lot will be packed.

I know you're talking mainly about 9-5 office type jobs, but I think it's all related.  It just took a while longer to affect the 9-5 world.

There has been so many little changes to any company policy reguarding the average worker, that most haven't realized what has been lost in short term employment, it is those that have spent many years at the grind that realize that those little changes collectively create losses you have described.  Forget about loyalty from either side, it's just a job. I'm sure that some of the older guys remember when there  was a good chance that you could do what your Dad did or better for "the company", we don't have that anymore. The middleclass workers are being sold out by empire builders. They buy your company ,lay off the employees, sell whatever product is left, show big profits and sell your company to the next sucker that can only read the profit margin on the spreadsheet. It's disgusting . And these are America's millionaires, movers and shakers, this is considered good business? Then the wealthiest of these bastards can run for president and act like they are saving businesses and jobs! Holiday time off, paid vacations, sick time, and contributions to healthcare and not to mention retirement will all be things of the past. Social Security will be gone and you haven't had enough extra money to put in your 401k? Well that'll be too fin bad, but it is going to be that way in our lifetime, ask any of these millionaires and they'll tell ya that you're lucky to have a job! Hey Bud ,could ya spare a ten bucks for a gallon of fuel ? What can we do as individuals, nothing. There has been an ill wind blowing across this country for a while, if this is your first sign, you haven't been paying attention , until it effects you. Congratulations to being alerted to the Sht storm that is sure to follow.

Sorry to hear about your troubles mate, I'm enjoying the hell outta my 4 day long Easter weekend as I type this. I'm a defence contractor now and my holidays are a lot better than when I was in the army for 24 years, I spent plenty of Christmases, Easters and birthdays working, with no "time in lieu", and no overtime either.

I'm currently involved in a stocktake at an airforce base's warehouse which will take around a month to do, the base is only 30 miles from my place, but because of the horrible peak hour traffic, it was taking me up to 2 hours to get to work, and another 2 hours to go home. I #$%*ed to my boss, so he told me I could start at 7am and finish at 3pm, and now the trip takes around 45 minutes to an hour, which is fantastic, as I have plenty of time to do some wrenching or go for a ride after work now. I actually look forward to going to work! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I guess there is never a shortage of people that absolutely, positively have to get their asses killed.

Yep, killing is the business mate, and business is good. I remember the lean times though, in between wars when times were really hard, folks I knew, good people with families being laid off, trying to eak out an existence, going without, taking any #$%*ty job that would get them through until America decided that some other little tinpot dictatorship needed some "Democratizing" or "De-Terrorizing" and all of the US' allies rallied to the call , and the killing became popular again. Yep, war's a wonderful thing for a defence contractor.............  ;)
