Who has installed an on board camera?
« on: June 05, 2006, 07:32:36 PM »
New poster... old lurker.  I have a 1980 CB650 that I am keeping as stock as I can.  I also have a 1982 CB900F that is very heavily modified.  I have the whole project thread over at www.cb1100f.net (I have the same username over there)

Now for the question... I was thinking about fabracating a movie camera mount for my bikes.  So anyone already do this yet?  Can you offer some hints/tips?

Thanks

Damn... 3 cameras  ???

I was out today to get a set of spark plugs and looked around... the only camera mounts they have are for newer bikes that have a flip up gas cap.  Im leaning towards a handlebar mount type but I think it would be cooler if you could see the gauges too  :D

here is a set up i made.... pity the camera i got was a little too cheap, was a really bad picture!!!!... the clamp is made of two handle bar tripple tree clamps bolted toggether..., and a mini tripod mount i bought at a camera shop, hpe this gives you an idea..

I'll try to post a pic of what I used, homemade for sure but it did allow me to mount it in a couple of different places on the bike. As I recall I cobbled together some bits for it also. Did learn a couple of things, being less than expert with a video camera, don't use auto exposure particularly if you are going through areas of different light intensities. The camera may not react quickly enough. I found it better to set it manually for the most predominant scene lighting, or the lighting you are most interested in. Also, at least on my v-camera, image stabilization does not work in any zoom mode and video shot on a MC without image stabilization can make you, well.. you know.  :P

I have an older JVC mini tape style camera that I want to mount and it would be best if I could transfer the same mount to my other machine.  As soon as I get a design I can get some material.  I am pretty good at metal fabracation so Im on the lookout for some ideas on designs.

Thanks all

I used a little tiny camera that I mounted to the left side of my helmet.  It's 1-1/4" in diameter and 1-1/2" long.  Has two wires that run down to a back pack where the SONY VideoWalkman is hiding.  The camera is only good enough for daytime use. Since it's mounted to the helmet, the vibration is really minimal, and I have the microphone mounted in the backpack where the wind noise is reduced.  Nice thing about this camera is you can mount it on your leg or knee and get some interesting shots.

I looked at suction cup arrangements, but decided I didn't want to trust a <insert value> video camera to that arrangement. In addition, it pretty much limits you to one location and perspective.

I kind of like the suction cup mount... I think the gas cap would be in the way though

Finally a question on here i feel qualified to lend 2 cents to.  (long time production freelancer first time biker)  B&H photo is a great store in NY, they have everything you'd need to throw a full on sequel to easy rider.  check this page: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=FetchChildren&Q=&ci=1172.
I know they have car mounting stuff, which is harder to do than a bike mount, so one of the grip/support options should be what you need.  They are pro-end gear suppliers so always a little pricey, but you can trust their stuff with your camera at high speeds.

good luck and post your videos!
