Actually I did email him about the issue and he said he would refund 50%. Maybe he's at least trying to own up to it. He offered to fix it but I said I would do di it myself because I don't know that I trust the quality. I stripped the powder coat and welded the seams today. when I tested it again, the oil Drain leaked too....I tried to weld it up but keep getting pin-holes. I will take it to Wally Rutlidge who lives near me. Ive seen this guy repair an engine block on a metric that had a piston pushed through the side. I could not even tell which cylinder was the bad one when he was done. I'll keep you's posted on the refund.

He probably said 50% so he could recover the money spent on materials.

He has no business welding ANY tanks until he takes some welding classes.
Just because you can go in a store and buy a welding machine does NOT qualify you to build tanks.

Geez it's a rare occurrence when someone says that they should have bought something from Carpy because his quality was better, but when I realised who made this oil tank I knew that you were right, that company that rhymes with penjies pafe pacer are rubbish.

Did you try to weld it or braze it? Brazing is best for filling holes, in fact I was surprised when I saw that the tank had originally been welded and not brazed. Anyway, I hope it works out for you. Cheers, Terry. ;D

The issue is not wether it was brazed or welded but HOW it was welded or brazed.

Lucky how about you finish typing a reply before posting, saves a lot of posts, and I am well aware oil is a petroleum product, I spend enough hours covered in it but it is not volatile in the fact that it is not likely to explode, it can be made to do so providing you can apply enough heat and compression, if a high school student was killed by welding on an OIL tank they must have had the tank sealed, or had washed it out with a volatile solvent, just a typical case of Darwins theory.  Oil will not explode without giving plenty of warning unless it is hit suddenly with extremely high temperatures and pressures not even an oxy kit has enough heat alone.  One more thing Lucky you wouldn't happen to know Rigid (KCC) you remind me a lot of him.

Many people will say you can just wash out a tank and as long as you leave it open you can weld on the tank.

There have been many who did that and the "cleaned" out tank when heated developed petroleum vapors and expanded so rapidly that it made it big BANG!! Then their eyebrows were burnt or some of their skin. They never forget that.

Some thought they could just weld a little tab on the edge of a diesel fuel tank
and they never heard anything. They are dead now.

The high school student that died was cutting a tank that previously had coconut oil in it. It exploded and the kid is dead now. He was supposed to have been supervised by a shop teacher.

There are many examples.

Please do not be one of the examples.
You deserve to get your money back.
You deserve to have a nice tank for that price.

DO not weld on that tank!!!

Lucky, you are extremely paranoid about welding tanks, there is nothing wrong with welding any tank as long as you know what you are doing, its done all the time. 100% of all tanks are welded at some point in their illustrious careers, whether its being made or repaired... I have had 40 year old car fuel tanks welded and will be having one of my Honda fuel tanks modified by welding. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it can't be done....

The safetycrats are everywhere ;D, you guys know it's a proven fact that riding motorcycles is dangerous too!

In fact I would venture to say that more people have died riding motorcycles than welding oil tanks :o, you wouldn't have us give up riding as well would you?
I think you made your point Lucky and he went ahead and welded anyway and surprise surprise he didn't blow up!

hold it flat!

I did not say it cannot be done.

But do not do it if you have no experience.
it is usually not worth  it.

If you are modifying a motorcycle gas tank
it can be cut apart with snips or electric cutters.

once it is apart (like in halves) then it is open to the air.
It is less dangerous.

Once gas has been inside the tank or other solvents, the vapor forming chemicals
are in the microscopic fabric of the metal . Then when it gets very hot from welding more fumes can be produced.

Lets not go into scared child mode.
There are ways to cut a tank without sparks or heat.

So is Lucky really Rigid? Was Rigid really King Kuntstome Cycles? I'm so confused, I must have been sniffing those dangerous vapours last time I welded an oil tank....................  :o
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Rigid is KCC for sure, he posted a link to his website a while back now and said it was his.  Now Lucky on the other hand I think must be related in some way to KCC err I mean Rigid, but I'm pretty sure he is not the same person.

Okay
I know this is old now but just heard back from Wally my welder. He is pro but can't fix it either. It was welded with flux core and is full of pin holes. Any way, he is making me a new tank from aluminum and that is a lesson learned. I hope that Benjie welds a tank with oil in it. (not really cause I don't want anyone to get hurt but "URRG"!) too many dirt-bags out there. I will post a picture of the new tank. Wally is amazing and I should have used him in the first place. That's what happens when you save a few bucks! Hope you all get along :)

Many young guys now buy a small wire feed welder ,build one motorcycle and they are instantly in business as a custom motorcycle builder.
Some even get on television.
