Out of the mouths of wives (carbs)
« on: June 05, 2006, 09:01:23 PM »
OK she asked it and I have no clue but it seems like a very decent question...

I had all the carbs on the kitchen table tonight (whats the word for negative Brownie Points?).
Anyway she says, Why four carbs?  Ive had lots of 6&8 cylinder cars with only One carb!

I hate it when they stump me like that!

One carb per cylinder provides a better fuel delivery.

What this means is with an individual carb per cylinder the mixture control and fuel atomization can be more precisely controlled.

Remember some of those cars with 6 or 8 cylinders had carbs with multiple venturi's (barrels).

A 4 barrel carb is in effect two carbs + two more that open generally under 2/3 throttle to wide open throttle.

New cars with fuel injection have an injector per cylinder for the same reason better fuel delivery and atomization.

Atomization - the mixing of fuel with air. Which in effect suspends droplets of fuel of varying sizes in the air. Too big a droplet burns poorly or puddles in the cylinder or intake. Too small is bad too. Uniformity provided by 4 carbs is a plus

Does anyone know of a suitable silencer (muffler) which will fit on a wife when she wants to ask questions?

You are a lucky man indeed. If my wife sees the carb rack on the kitchen I can tell you she would not be wondering why 4 carbs. She would be kicking my ass out of there with the carbs!!!

On your kitchen table??  I'm with Raul on this one.  I'd have plenty of time to ponder this issue while I visited the protologist to get them extracted...

Early suppressors were created around the beginning of the 20th century by a number of inventors. American inventor Hiram Percy Maxim is credited with inventing and selling the first commercially successful models circa 1902. Maxim called his device under the trademark Maxim Silencer. Later this device would be adapted to internal combustion engines to generate the muffler, which is still called a silencer in the UK. The term silencer has since fallen out of favor among the firearms industry, being replaced with the more accurate term sound suppressor or just suppressor.

In the United States, it is legal for an individual to possess and use a suppressor; however, one must go through the National Firearms Act process administered by the BATFE in order to do so. Such transfers also require a federal tax payment of two hundred dollars and a thorough background check. Some states go further, and explicitly ban any civilian possession of suppressors.

I don't know why we have to have 4 carbs for a 4-cyllinder... I'd say two carbs would be enough!

Dyno testing was done for the proper fuel and air mixture. Our test bike had 44+ thousand miles on it. Gave it a mini tune up, and we went from 51 HP to 58.8 HP.(rear wheel) Same bike, Same gas, Same gearing, etc... Did we mention that stupid sucking noise is gone?

Well the four carbs are a crude way of doing what fuel injection was designed for. Deliver fuel directly to each cylinder. If you figured out the HP output per cubic inch, our old CBs probably beat most muscle cars.
