Spoke lacing patten for CB 400F
« on: April 08, 2012, 01:24:54 PM »
I'm lacing up some rims for a CB400F. I have discovered that there is more than 1 patten that will match up.
If the #2 spoke of 4 spokes, (on the opposite side of hub) is in FRONT of #1, it will lace up with plenty of threads still showing on the spokes as you get near to tension.
If you put  the #2 spoke  (on the opposite side of the hub) BEHIND #1, it will still lace up, (with a different pattern)
and the spoke threads just disappear as you start to each tension. I realize you can continue tightening the nipple as it goes past the threaded part of the spokes, and eventually starts to come through the back of the nipple.
Sorry to ramble, I have gotten several (How To's) from websites, only 1 with lacing pattern pictures, and it shows the #2 spoke BEHIND #1.
Thanks

umm not to sure what you mean by #1 and #2 spokes but I am doing the rims on my cb350f which are the same as the 400. I just took lots of pics of the rims and laced them back up the same way. PM me if you would like some reference pics.

When I did mine I was lucky that the previous spokes had left shallow grooves on the hub so it was a great visual guide.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Say you have 36 holes on a 18in rim.

And you have 36 holes on a "d" diameter brake hub.

In order for all the spokes to have the same lenght, there is only one lacing pattern. If you change the pattern, it is like rotating rim or hub on relation to each other, what equals to shorten some spokes and lenghten others.

I recently bought spokes to lace a rim to a hub, and regardless on how many measurements I took, I ended up buying them too long. Pieces of spoke protruded from each nipple, so I had to file them down one by one..... live and learn.

I'm down to final tightening, they all have a nice ping to them, but without a torque spoke wrench
its a guess as far as how tight. I could probably go tighter without exploding the hub, or stripping the threads.
Does anyone know what proper torque specs are for spokes. Do they tend to loosen if not properly tightened initially.
Thanks
