TURN SIGNAL TROUBLES
« on: August 31, 2011, 07:43:12 AM »
I have a 1977 cb750f supersport.  Long and the short of it is the previous owner took off the front and rear flashers. (Hack-sawed off the front) Got after market turn signals and hooked them up. Well, the rear flashers work great, even with the annoying buzzer!  Tried hooking up the front LED signals on the mirrors but they blew the lighting fuse!  Tried running wires to the rear and splicing them into the wiring at the rear signals (orange on left; blue on right.)....wondering if it would make a difference splicing in behind the headlight or if the LEDs are too much for the circuit?

The mirror have 1 power wire as they ground to the handlebars.
Any help would be appreciated!

The original front lights used a two-element bulb, one for turn, one for running.
There were two wires for each light, both hot, one for each element.
The blinker was grounded through the body where it attached to the headlight ears.

soooo.......by this do you mean that these single-wire units will not work?  The rears had 1 wire and worked fine...guess I thought they were the same as the front. :o

No, they should work just make sure you use the correct wire.

Sorry being dense; by correct wire do you mean that I need to wire into the bunch behind the headlight and not go to the back?  A friend said that it did not work that way due to too much of a voltage drop.

In the headlight bucket one wire will be a continuous running light and the other the actual blinker wire as used in the 2 filament bulb. You need to find with a tester or such the one wire on each side that is the dedicated blinker wire.

I finally figured out the shorting prob!  On the new mirrors with turn signals the positive wire comes out a hole at the base of the mount.  When I tightened the left one, it pinched the wire and would short out there.  Fixed that and it works great!
