Stuck Front Brake
« on: April 10, 2012, 05:24:38 PM »
So, I have neglected to ride my bike for a couple of weeks due to writing a thesis for graduate school and when I rode it last night I noticed that the front break didn't seem to be working well.  I could push the lever in but it was really tight.  The pads also look like they are clinched on the rotor.  If they just seem to be stuck can you pry them apart?  Also does anyone have some checks that I could run through to determine what may be wrong with the break?  I haven't checked the break fluid when I got it from the PO, I don't know if that would cause them to get stuck or not.

Two most common things that cause a sticking disc brake on these bikes are, 1.  Crud build-up behind the caliper piston seal that prevents the piston from fully retracting, or 2.  Plugged up fluid return hole in the master cylinder reservoir.

Those fluid return holes are really really tiny.  They clog easily.

And don't put your face right over the reservoir while you pump the lever to see if you've successfully cleared it.  It'll shoot a stream of brake fluid right in your eye. :o

Just as has been said so far..clear the tiny return hole in the MC and then bleed the system..pump a little fluid through the bleeder valve on the caliper & get some fresh fluid in the system before you can determine if you need to take the caliper apart.

Assuming its the return hole, if you need to relieve the brake to push the bike, turn the bleeder valve and let some preesure out. Don't beat or lever the caliper. Put a rag or a hose over it as it may be under pressure (hence the sticking) and shoot out at you. Once you've done this, don't pull the brake lever again or you'll be stuck again.
