Advancing cam timing on a 550
« on: April 10, 2012, 02:56:45 PM »
Currently my 550 has a cam from a 650 and for the most part I'm happy with it but I would however like to have a bit more low end/mid range torque and I'm kicking the idea around of advancing the cam timing at least 4 degrees to do it. The main reason why is because I'm using a 34 tooth rear sprocket and the reason for that is because I wanted to cut down the RPM's a bit while cruising on the highway however the price I've paid for that has been a noticeable loss in torque. I know I can get an adjustable cam sprocket however I'm on a tight budget and I have a spare factory cam sprocket to play with so my question is how far should I elongate the bolt holes in the cam sprocket to get the advance I want? I know a degree wheel will be needed to set the cam timing right but I don't want to elongate the bolt holes any more than I have to.
