79 cb125s crankcase
« on: April 10, 2012, 05:22:15 PM »
Hey guys, first post here..

I've been restoring a cb125s since last october and it's running well.
Not sure if i'm missing something,
but i'm trying to pull off my right crankcase cover to clean the oil screen and not having good luck.

The honda manual gives no instruction besides "remove right crankcase cover"
I removed the bolts holding it on, took off the kick starter, foot peg, and disconnected the clutch cable but it's not budging.

Am I missing something?
I knocked it a little bit with a rubber mallet but I don't wanna pry it too hard in fear something needs to be disconnected.

As long as you've got all the bolts off around the perimeter, that's it.

Actuate that clutch lever.  The reaction should pop it off.  It's just a stuck gasket, I'm betting.

hey thanks!

That's what I was guessing, I just wanted to be sure before I broke something.  And the clutch lever should pull out of the case huh?

I've built 2 60s Mustangs from the ground up but this is the first time working on a bike so I'm just breaking ground here on the similarities!  :)

jon,
The dowel/knock pins(there should be 2 there)will kind of hang up a little on both the forward and rear end of you're side case..that along w/ too much gasket cement can make the job you're doing a bit of a pain;I've used a hard plastic mallet w/ success to break them free before.

Just to check, is there also the screen under a large bolt on the left side engine?  then the centrifugal oil filter inside that case?  That's what my 72 has anyway.

yup the screen is on the other side.  and i tried everything to get it loose with no avail...

i finally took it out in the driveway, connected the clutch cable back on, put it in first and rolled it back and forth dropping the clutch.  the crankcase finally popped a bit after about 10 times of this.  i then found out the support for my right step bar was bent up a little from the last owner who dropped the bike so i had some fun hammering that down for a while to slide the case off.

long story short, got it off now, cleaned all the sludge and went ahead and sanded and painted the case for now, it looks amazing...
