I have a 74 cb550 and in the slow process of a a cafe build. I need a new tank and but I don't know whats all compatible . I like the almost boxy look to the 1980 kz440, any kind of Norton tank, and just the run of the mill cafe tanks ex. http://i.imgur.com/uEOiT.jpg (not run of the mill but same idea). I'm open to suggestions of what you have seen work before, and I also want to know; What tanks are you using? how did it fit? where did you find them?

Edit: Would a 1968 CB350 tank fit? http://i.imgur.com/qW4W4.jpg

Stock tank, just bang some knee dents in them. I was considering this tank for a bit: http://www.cb750cafe.com/parts.php?id=62 It has more capacity and looks pretty damn cool. Downside is that it's like $500 shipped, and longer than stock.

I was thinking about going to a motorcycle graveyard type deal that's not far from where i live to pick up a tank off some old bike for cheap. That's kinda why i want to know what are some of the better fits for this frame. I would do something like what you posted but like you said its kinda pricey... as in almost as much as I've put into the bike so far lol.

I was looking for a CB350 tank that I could lengthen for my next CB550K cafe racer build. I would only add material to the middle of the tank to make it the right length, and also narrow the middle like knee dents. Sort of like the plastic tanks they sell for cafe racers. Good Luck!!

I'm going to try out a tank from a '76 750F on my 76 550F, just because I have one laying around.  I'm pretty sure I'll have to knock dents in the front of the tank for handlebar clearance.  And the forward mounting bungs are going to need to be moved.  Should be interesting.  ;D

I tried a 1973 yamaha xs650 tank the other day and it almost sat perfectly only the double petcock barely set it off at the bottom of the neck. It looked so good to, I was really bummed it didn't fit.
