Exhaust - Studs or bolts?
« on: April 11, 2012, 07:28:28 AM »
Just finishing up a complete rebuild.  I have a new 4 into 1 and thought I would remove the studs to make it easier to put back in the frame and it offers a cleaner look.  Well after breaking 2 (i know many have felt my pain!) I am starting to reconsider.  Any thoughts on which is better or a matter of preference?
Many thanks

It depends a lot on what pipes you can find.. spigot mount headedrs can be taken off in around 3 minutes or less, try that with stud/split collars..

The headers that use a stamped steel plate and studs for mounting to the head are much lighter than the headers that use spigot/collar arrangement.

Studs should be stronger and not wear threads in head.
I would prefer to use them whenever possible

I replaced bolts with studs. Got them at ACE hardware. I was lucky that only one bolt broke off in the engine and it was far enough in that I could still put in the stud.

I screwing bolts in and out of the engine makes me antsy.

Spigots dont wear  threads in  the head, if using that type, studs is better than bolts..

Be sure to use some good copper anti-sieze on the new bolts/studs if you ever want to take them out again.

Thanks for the advice!  I think I'm going back with studs.  I feel so stupid!  If I just would have left the darn thing alone, I wouldn't have had to go to all this trouble with taking the old studs out.  They were in perfect shape. Live and learn I suppose.
