How much to pay for a CB750 Super Sport (with pics :D)
« on: April 10, 2012, 02:08:37 AM »
Not sure if this is the best subforum to post this but anyway on to the bike. I've come across a 1976 CB750 Super Sport with 33,200 miles and a clean title. The carbs are out of the bike and are included in the deal. The engine isn't seized but since the carbs are out, it of course doesn't run.  The engine, frame, and tank paint are in decent condition, with the tank having one small dent. The seat/tail are in good condition and it does have the original black side covers. With all of that said, what would you pay for the bike based on the information presented?

Thanks in advance,
Braulio

Based on that information... $200.  If it doesn't run when I go to pick it up it's parts.

It's a from a family friend so I might go just a tad higher but thanks for giving me a general range. Would your price estimate change if they have the carbs?

Here's a close up of the engine if this helps anyone determine price. Unfortunately, the pit bulls aren't for sale. haha

Just from the one picture I would say $500 would be the tops and that would be only I I really wanted it.  It looks like its going to take some work and $$$ to get it road worthy. If he wants to sell it he will- don't let any "connection" to the person make you pay more than the bike is worth.

Yeah I get the connection part and the price difference would be minimal, like maybe giving him $50 more.
So by what I can get from the posts so far the bike is worth between $250-$400. If he doesn't have the carbs does anyone know what Keihin or Mikuni's this bike runs and if there is a possible race version (ie. CB500 uses Keihin and race carbs are CR29's)

CB750 uses the same carbs as the 500, if you can find the proper boots you can also use some VERY PRFERRED 29mm MIKUNIS.

Thank you good sir. I assume the race carbs would still be the CR29's then if I go for a Keihin set up?

FWIW, +1 on all that's been said.  Judging by the tank, it's a '76.  If you haven't already; before you talk money, look in the tank, look in the battery box for acid damage, check the seat (does it exist, is it shot), are there any side covers, look for the stock air box, ask about the original front fender and handle bars.  These are things that could make you comfortable with offering a lower price and show the owner that the bike isn't gold sitting in his garage.

brake calipers are likely to be shot as well.
Looks like original exhaust is gone.

This may be true if you're referring to "race" carbs, but the stock carbs are not the same. Be prepared to possibly spend hundreds on carbs, boots, jets, air box or pods, etc.

FWIW,

I've got many of the '76 F parts on hand that you might need.  If you do go for it and need a line on parts, I've got a bunch of decent stuff on hand.  For example:

Full set of carbs, boots (both sides) and airbox
Sidecovers, seat, toolbox
Full 4-1 headers w/original exhaust pipe
Lights, signals, wire harness, cables, switches
Oil tank, ignition parts, front brake full system, minus rotor
New set of chain and sprockets (stock sizes)

There's probably more there, but I'm not in the garage at the moment.

All the best,

Shane

Thanks Shane I'll keep you in mind :)
And thank you to everyone else. The owner might have the carbs in his garage, but I just figured that I would present this carb-less. There are side covers or at least left side one and I believe it does have the seat/tail.
Thanks again to everyone for all the help, hopefully this will be my second CB :D

Quick update: Friend knows where the carbs are and they are now included in the deal. OP is now updated with new info and if anyone would like to change their price I would be grateful since so many things have changed since my original post last night.

Unless he gets it running at a potentially large expense you will be buying a parts bike. $500 at most.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I would say no more than $500 considering your location.  A nice running F0/1 in fine cosmetic condition may bring $2000 so that can give you a base price.  Consider that this bike will need brakes rebuilt, new rubber, battery, the front fender is wrong, aftermarket exhaust that my be decent but could be junk.  The airbox is important is it missing?  Maybe a drive chain and sprocket.  What condition is the tank in, at minimum it will need to be cleaned.  You may have to troubleshoot the electrics and a broken starter button is common.  You can easily be $1000 into it on top of the purchase price and that's not including labor so you can see the price basis.  The owner is not sitting on a goldmine.  They are very nice bikes, better than a K bike IMO  but they don't have the collector value of the earlier K bikes.  It is not running so you are taking a chance and that also has to be part of the equation.  It looks fairly complete and a worthwhile project so $500 or less and you will have done good.

A non runner I picked up for $500. :)  Sometimes you get lucky. ;D

+1 Nice bike Steve, you've got good taste!

Thanks again guys. Ended up the old man said we don't have enough room at the moment, so I contacted the friend who had the bike. I asked if he would still have it over the summer when we would possibly have more room and he said yes, so this might be a project in the making in a few months. I kind of hope so...
