CB360/CJ Kick Start Shaft
« on: April 02, 2012, 05:32:55 PM »
I have had issues with the kick start bracket failing on my CB360, I have gone through 3 in the last year. ( Requires ripping into the bottom end to fix)  Then I noticed that my friends CJ360, 1977, which is a kick start only bike stock (no electric start at all)  has the bracket much more beefed up than mine, so I decided to convert my 360.  I got the bracket off a CJ, but it appears that another part must be changed as well, im guessing the shaft based on my research.  I was wondering if anyone had any CJ parts laying around they could take a look at for me?

What part exactly are you calling the kick start bracket?

The difference you have observed may be due the fact that the CB360T is a six speed and the CJ360T is a 5 speed.

The bracket is #23 on the cb and 24 on the CJ.  It is much beefier than my CB.  I got that, but as can be seen it is at a different orientation with the flange that the gear slides into to pull it away from the left side gear.  Its kinda hard to explain without you being able to see it.

I have the two brackets, I'll take pictures at some point with them on the shaft so you can see what is different.  Based on pictures I have seen I think the shaft is slightly different.

Ok, so I figured out it is definitely the shaft that has a changed orientation.  anybody have CJ360 parts laying around?  Not sure if I will be able to even find one.

I'm curious what could be causing you're kickstarter shafts to wear so quickly.

The shaft itself is fine, its the cb bracket that keeps bending just slightly.

Its the part at the bottom of the picture in this add:

the section bent in a U shape bends out a few mm, which lets the gears touch.  Haven't heard much about this issue. so wondering if something else in that area is wrong.

could it have play in the hole in the cases where it sits in there..or in the side cover hole & possibly causing the whole kick starter to move around more than it should ?

Its possible the side cover might.  The engine has had 2 different bottom cases on it, and two different shafts, (due to an unrelated issue) and both have had the bending bracket issue.  I'll have to see if it has extra play in some direction, I have a few 360's that I can compare, this is the only one that gets extensive kick starting, due to the electric start being non-functional.  I have however had 2 of them fail, this bike 3 times, one other bike once.  Seems like if they get kicked for regular starting they fail eventually.  Maybe it was never intended to be kick started this often, thus why the CJ, without the electric start at all, has a beefier bracket.
