I've been pretty busy with work and haven't been able to get much work done on the bike lately.  I did take a look at the valves and I plan on adjusting them either tonight or over the weekend.  In the picture below, where do I make the measurement?  This might be obvious, but I can' tell where to put the measuring device.  The nut on the first valve I tried to loosen is on pretty tight, as were the tappet covers.  The last person to work on this bike seems to have been a bit heavy handed...
Any pointers or things to avoid as I start to work on the valves?

You see that screw with the slot. The other end of it is where it touches the valve stem between them is where you put the feeler gauge you may find it easier to put a 45 bend on the end but it will fit. It gets easy after a few times
Ken
What he said. Also,

if the locknuts are really tight, then concentrate on loosening the nut without holding the slot. Use a box end wrench or better a socket with a breaker bar to loosen. Then you'll need the box end wrench and a fat blade screwdriver, I like using a stubby, for the adjustment. My experience is you just can't do it with an open end wrench. Well you can, but you'll struggle as the spanner tries to spread and slip as you tighten the nut.

Always check the adjustment after tightening the nut. The act of tightening the nut will often tighten the screw and mess your adjustment up.  If the clearance is 2thou, set it then check it with a 3thou. The 3 shouldn't fit.

So....
I thought I was going nuts trying to figure this out after work.  I finally realized my gauge doesn't have the proper thicknesses for the CB550.  So I need to get another tool.  I am hoping they have it at home depot in NYC you would be surprised at the lack of options I have here in the rotten apple.
In the meantime take a look at the image of my front brakes.  Pretty rusty, I am concerned.
As always thanks for the help.

It would behoove you to squirt something on the rusty bits before you try taking the stuff apart. I'm assuming that when you squeeze the front brake lever with your hand it feels pretty spongy? What's the master cylinder look like inside?

As for tools, if you can't find in the city, let your fingers do the walking and order online. You could always order stuff from Z1 enterprises. They're not too far away from you...

I've been finding all my tools on eBay.  I will look into what the master cylinder is and get back to you. Thanks.

Just check out the brake system parts diagram I posted on page 6 of this thread. The master cylinder (and parts) is number 25. It's that thing with the screw top by your right handlebar switch. It's where you'd put brake fluid.

Nothing happened as in it didn't turn over or it didn't fire up?
Take the plugs back out and clean them. Connect the plugs to the HT leads and lay them on the engine metal to metal. Turn the engine over and see if all plugs are sparking.

You DO NOT need to remove spark plugs to see if they work.
Just take your timing light and clip it onto each spark plug wire one at a time and you will see the strobe flash. Be smart.

If you have a light. :)

I don't mind removing the plugs to do the spark test.  Either way I am STILL waiting to borrow a timing light from a friend.  Hopefully our schedules will match today and I can pick it up.  Also still waiting on the proper feeler gauge that I purchased on Ebay to set the valves.  I will keep you posted.

Where are you in NYC?

If you haven't found it already there is an email list for vintage bikes called NYC VinMoto. It's free to join up an there are quite a few of us on there with parts and tools and stuff willing to help out. You WILL get a ton of emails because it is an email list but it is the backbone of the vintage motorcycle community in NYC.

The reason I mention it is that help on the Internet will only take you so far, sometime you just need someone to come out and show you how it is done for you to get it. Lots of us have 500/550s/750s in the NYC area.

I don't really want to go back through 7 pages so I'll just ask point blank- did you get a title with this bike? If not I recommend you stop putting another cent or lick of work into this bike until you actually have ownership papers on the bike. It's really easy to get screwed on a title-less bike in NY.

The previous owner says he never got a NY title. I have the registration for the bike and could get some kind of receipt from the previous owner.  Do you know if that is enough?

As far the brakes, don't be afraid of them.  I just learned about the front brake on my bike as I rebuilt the brake system.

Don't forget ebay is a great place to buy used parts too.

I eneded up re-using my caliper, piston, and mount, but replaced everything else.  I purchased new bolts and misc. hardware from bike bandit, new brake pads, new bleeder, new hard line, and braided stainless lines from Dime City Cycles, a master cyclinder (used) and master cyclinder rebuild kit from Ebay.

The hardest thing was breaking loose the rusted bolts that run through the caliper.  But after that, I cleaned and inspected everything, and get it back together.  I had an issue with the master cylinder rebuild though; I assembled the parts according to the vague drawing in the Honda manual, and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working.  After looking it up on the internetz, I found a step-by-step picture tutorial that illustrated the correct relation the parts should have.  It works now!

Good luck with the title!  I don't know how it works in NY, so I can't be of any help with that.  Being from New Jersey, I certianly appreciate my situation now, living in Georgia.  There is no title on a bike as old as mine (1972 cb500) in Georgia, so all I need is insurance and a bill of sale to register mine when I'm ready.

Nope you need a title. You can call the previous owner who is on the regustration and ask if he still has the title (he probably won't) or if he is willing to apply for a replacement title. But be warned he may just want the bike back and as the last titled owner he would have every right to show up at your house with the cops and take it back. That is a worst case scenario however and you are better off just calling first and seeing if he wants to help you out.

There is also a way to register it in New Hampshire and then use the New Hampshire regi to get a NY title but it is a pain in the ass.

The previous owner handed me the key himself and said do whatever you want with it. If it isn't a huge inconvenience for him he would help but he lives in California now.

If the previous owner is not the last registered owner then he is irrelevant.

Handing you the key and telling you to do what you want isn't going to fly with a NY DMV. You need paperwork.

What is the registration you have? Is it NY regi? What is the date.

The previous registration is from July 2005.  Says the bike is a 75, though I think it is a 74.  Registered to the neighbor who gave it to me.  I am going to go to the DMV next week I guess and see exactly what I need to do.

If the last registered owner was your neighbor then he needs to apply for a duplicate title from NY State. It is pretty easy and  He can do this online here:

http://www.dmv.ny.gov/title/default.html

you can't do this for him in person, he has to be the one to do it. I suppose you can do it online for him but they will send it to his address and you will need to pick it up from him. I just did this for a car my parents own so from personal expirence it takes about a month to get the title.

work it out with him who pays the fee.

Looks like I will be getting the title:

"Dear Adam,

Sorry it took longer than I expected...but I did find the title!

Seems like you will need me to fill out the transfer part on the back (will need your help to get mileage, etc.) and then make up a bill of sale.  Not sure if there are tax implications for you concerning the "price paid" part, or if I can call it a gift, etc. Have you done any research on your bike forums or anything on that one?  Will ask Rob if he has any ideas as well.  As soon as we decide, I can get it all in the mail to you.  Hooray!"

I say start on the brakes and work out other bugs etc. Sounds to me like the title will be a done deal.
