For you audiophiles/vintage guys
« on: April 13, 2012, 08:18:25 PM »
Was taking a look at my grandpas stuff, digging through records and such.  He loves music, and his dad was really into audio. Was a radio DJ for a while back in the 50s.  Here is some of the stuff he has at his house, all in near mint condition. (pictures are just pulled from the web)
Sony PSX-7. Sweet direct drive turntable.  Tonearm is Carbon fiber. Front buttons are capacitive touch.

Akai GX-630d-ss Quad Recorder.

Akai GX-760d Cassette deck. Elegant.

Also have some tall Akai speakers that still sound great, and possibly some additional hardware somewhere else.  Had a great time chilling and listening/talking music with my Grandpa

I would love that reel to reel.

I'd imagine shipping would be hell! Its got one small nick on the left side, from when it was moved over the course of the years.  As far as I know it still works perfect.

Beautiful r2r and sweet turntable. Ive only had 1 reel 2 reel in my time and it barely worked so didnt keep it. Finally procurred a working turntable from the parents house after last years tornado so my old Ozzy lps may live on. My longtime weakness has always been mid 70's Kenwood two channel amps. I have a few that work and a few of course that dont. Just cant lettum go, yet cant find the right person to solder a new relay for me on the dead ones. Rock on guys.

We still are listening to our Sansui 999 series amp and tuner, the Akai GXC 38D cassette deck and the JBL100 speakers be bought in 1971. A local audiofile that tuned up the Sansuis said to never sell them. Good stuff from the old days and...............I just became a grandfather. Cliff.

I still have an Akai GX747 reel to reel.   Looks like yours, but not quad.  Is that auto reverse?  Or does quad make it so you can't run both directions?

The original MSRP on the Sony was $350 new. A good turntable but it seems that the automatic functions would wear out over time due to the plastic construction. Should sound good if it still has the carbon fiber arm paired with a newer Audio Technica or similar cartridge.

The Akai R2R looks interesting, does it do stereo along with quad?

Specs on the reel to reel.

As far as the sony, auto functions still work perfectly, and sounds great.  From the late 70s, and is a great looking unit.  Me and the Grandpa sat and listened to some music for a few hours.

Some of those older 70's and 80's vintage receivers could use a recap of the power supply if they have not been changed, especially if they are electrolytic caps. But yeah, old Sansui, Marantz, Yammys and Yamahas were built like tanks back then. Once you got into the 80's and further they started to cheapen them up quite a bit.

Dave 500...have you checked the connections of the turntables cartridge?...either tiny little wires or a four prong plug...another common source of that buzz...

I was fortunate enough to pick up a GX-77 and a GX-265 last winter, just needed minor repairs. $40 for the pair!

Back in the 1970s my dad traded a decent MGB for an Akai R2R.  Just goes to show you how much they cost back then!  They're still worth a pretty penny today assuming you find one for sale and a buyer who's interested in antiquated technology of limited utility.

Hard to say.  I went to that link that Nick posted on his R2R, and it didn't say for his, but I looked mine up and there was a listing for one at about $75. at the bottom of the page.

http://www.thevintageknob.org/akai-GX-747.html

Here's the thing, though.  This stuff still competes.  Today's amps are much cleaner, but the components are still there.  The difference between digital and one of these reel to reels is that digital remains constant and never degrades.  Technically, tape degrades at a very small rate(probably measurable, but not noticeable to your ears), vinyl records at a substantially higher rate(in time, you'll hear it).

CD's have a design life of 25 years, LP's design life is 40 years.
