I recently rediscovered my vinyl collection and vowed never to play cd again...unless I'm too inebriated to safely put a needle on the record. Vinyl is soooo much nicer.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Hard to say.  I went to that link that Nick posted on his R2R, and it didn't say for his, but I looked mine up and there was a listing for one at about $75. at the bottom of the page.

Here's the thing, though.  This stuff still competes.  Today's amps are much cleaner, but the components are still there.  The difference between digital and one of these reel to reels is that digital remains constant and never degrades.  Technically, tape degrades at a very small rate(probably measurable, but not noticeable to your ears), vinyl records at a substantially higher rate(in time, you'll hear it).
...actually, I don't know of any improvements in amplifier circuit design since the '50's, all they have done is made the circuit components smaller, less expensive, and more widely available...and, uh, hard drives crash all the time for no apparent reason, anyone here have a 10 year old cd that actually still plays without skipping?  ...cdr's?, I have generally found them to screw up if you look at them wrong
If it works good, it looks good...

And yet, vinyl is waaaay more fragile.  Scratches easily, requires cleaning, which if done improperly, can damage the record.  CDs can be copied, with no degradation.  More and more, Ipods and flash drives are seeing their way into our car stereos, but before that, I never carried an original CD in my van.

On a side note, I ran across an ill fated idea when I was a kid.  It was a under dash device that played 45 rpm records, made by RCA.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

I bought and sold Vintage stereo for about 10 years. I actually paid ff my Mortgage. I stopped a few years ago and have been tossing out stuff as I find it.

If you can find a 70's Yamaha you have a real good sounding unit. Not snob appeal.

The reason the old stuff sounds better is that it had transformers which pushed out the bass. They were designed to do High Midrange and Bass, Today's units use time delays, tweeters and subwoofers to give the illusion of good sound.

I hate vinyl records, I know they sound better, they are a pain in the ass.

Ahh but look at the fun you have reading the covers, especially gatefolds.

I will give you that. I do miss the Album art. That is why I have 100's of records. I never listen to them, but I do like the cover art and gate folds

I remember years ago one of the audio magazines pulled a dirty trick on some analog lovers and did a blind test purportedly between digital and analog.  They played a digital sample of a musical piece, then an 'analog" version.  The test group preferred the "analog" playback, with its superior presence and "air."  The joke was that they were from the same source.  The analog version was actually the digital source with tape hiss and surface noise added.
