Brake side mirror threads stripped... boohoo !... best fix ?
« on: April 14, 2012, 06:15:45 PM »
Brake side mirror threads are stripped-out completely. Was able to tighten the mirror enough for it to stay in place with bad threads for a while, but now it's almost smooth in the bore !! It's a rare K8 perch, need to save it...
any good ideas anyone ?

Helicoil? If you can't find a helicoil with the same thread perhaps you could drill it out and epoxy/JB Weld a nut?

Ray,
I would second the helicoil option. In lieu of that, take a tap and tap it out (doesn't really matter what one) to get some threads in there. JB weld into the hole pushing it into the threads. Once it has setup and cured, re-drill and tap to the correct size for the mirror. Paint the top black and you will never know it was done. When tapping JB Weld, make sure you use tap oil and do lots of back threading.

Another variation on the JB Weld is to put some in the hole.  Find a bolt with the same thread and give it a light shot of WD 40 and stick it in the hole squeezing in any JB to fill the voids.  After it dries the bolt will turn out and you have cast in threads.  You may have to drill the hole out larger in the first step to get enough JB in there.

If you go that route don't use straight epoxy in the little tubes.  It's too brittle.  It needs a high density filler added.  JB has that. I have an assortment of fillers I add to epoxy to get it to do what I want.
