CB750F front putting front wheel back together but something looks odd

Hey guys.

I've had my bike apart for a few weeks now and I'm scratching my head at times on getting everything back together right.  I've got the service manual and everything looks right here according to the manual but still doesn't seem right to me.

Pics below but I've got a 3/4" worth of play in the front axle moving back and forth.  Is this right?  Am I missing something here?

I think the nut is on backwards.  The hex part goes closest to the hub.
