Dual Discs to Single
« on: April 13, 2012, 04:09:38 PM »
This is my first time posting in here, though I read through the forum all the time for help.

Anyway, I have a 1982 cb750c and I want to get rid of the dual disc brake set up--I want to run single disc.  I don't see the point and it looks ridiculous--correct me if I've overlooked something.  Anyway, my questions are:

1) do I need to buy a new master cylinder to run just the single disc?  Or, can I simply remove the caliper/disc/brake line from the one side?

2) If I do need a new master cylinder, would it be easier just to buy a length of brake line to go straight from the handlebars to the brake (to skip the front brake junction on the forks)?

Let me know what you think.  Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I'm new to this...

You will have diminished braking capacity. Those old brake calipers were never all that great to begin with and when you have one working alone instead of both together... well... you'll just have to think ahead for stopping.

As for your questions:
1.) Your best bet would be to get a new MC designed to work with one caliper. It creates a better balanced system.

2.) You can certainly run one long line instead of using the junction box, but a lot of these old Honda's used a pressure switch in the junction box for the brake light. You may also have it on your MC. Just check to see which way yours is set up so you can keep the lights working right.

Looks rudiculous or not - if it works, keep it. It helps to have good working brakes, many people go dual because the original stopping power is nothing to write home about.

Just remember two brakes equals twice the stopping power.

To me, 2 discs look more balanced and obviously work better than one. I have never heard of anyone that wanted to downgrade their brakes except for the "no front brake" chopper bobber crowd.....{death wish}

Thanks for the help!  I figured people would tell me to keep the dual disc.  I'm replacing the mag wheels with spoked rims, and instead of getting a dual disc hub, I thought I'd just use the one I already have (single disc).  I guess maybe I'll stick with two--although from what I understand, one really is enough, but i guess that's all subjective.

thanks again!

After my crash and front end destruction (750), I'm gonna rebuild with a GL1000 front end.
I WISH I'd had dual brakes.
My vote would be keep them.
You could drill the discs to give it a more visually interesting front.
Whatever you do, good luck!

I went from dual to single on one of mine.  On the street at legal speeds one is enough.  I do like the more balanced look of two.  2 of mine do still have duals.

I would go to single maybe to save weight, if I use a big 300 or 320 rotor and a good caliper setup properly...
