Dunstall 4 into 2 Header / Silencer Mounting Plates
« on: March 29, 2012, 02:13:23 PM »
I posted this to the WTB section, but figured that I would post here as well as I would be happy to get just the dimensions for the plate to fashion a set up for myself.
From WTB section "I realize this is a long shot, but here it goes anyhow.
I have a 1976 cb750k, I have the Dunstall 4 into 2 header and I will soon have some reproduction widemouth Dunstall pipes.
What I don't have are the plates to mount the mufflers / pipes to the frame.
I realize these are hard to come by and would happily settle for dimensions and pics to fab my own set.
Again, looking for the plates to mount the pipes to the bike, not the rearset plates."
A picture with dimension would be great as well as a picture of the plate mounted between the bike and silencer.  The pics that I have seen all seem to miss that angle.
Thanks!
-Jeff

Jeff,
I can help you.  Lets move this off the HP section though as these are streetbike items.  What exactly do you want: dimensions or a tracing of the actual plates with the holes.  I would much rather send you tracings through the mail as it isn't going to be easy to get the angles correct or the holes in the correct locations.  Let me know.  Also, if you plan on using the Emgo "Dunstall" silencers first measure your outlet pipes.  If they are 1 5/8" or larger the Emgos won't fit.

Rookster, Thanks for the response. Tracings would be great if it isn't too much trouble for you. Looking at the reproductions at dime city, not sure of they are Emgos or not?

Here's a pic of what you're looking for.  They are 1/8" steel and look to be zinc plated rather than chrome.  Some plates had DUNSTALL stamped into them and others didn't.  PM me your address and I will get you out a copy of the tracings I made.

You can check out my Dunstall build for info on the exhaust and the issues with the Emgo Dunstall replica silencers.  The ones Dime City sells are the Emgos.  Measure your outlet pipes to make sure but they are probably a shade larger than 1 5/8" while the Emgo silencers are a shade under 1 5/8".  They won't fit.  If you are bent on getting a Dunstall Decibel replica silencer then you have to get the red end ones from England.  They are about double the price of the Emgos and they come in 2 sizes.  You need the larger size.  Otherwise any silencer will do.

Here's my build: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=55860.0

Rookster,
PM sent with my mailing address.
I took a closer look at Dime City's description and it they state that it should fit 1-1/2" to 1-3/4" pipes (stated ID = 1-9/16") with the included reducers.
I am going to check my pipes this eveing with the caliper just to be sure.
It seems like using a reducer would throw off the geometry for the bracket / hanger?
I would like to stick with the wide mouth Dunstalls if possible.

Rookster,
One more question for you.
How did you resolve your issue with the numbers written on the tape on the head pipes no matching the number stamped into the pipe?
My header is used and I have the same numbers written on the tape by p.o. not matching the stamp issue.

Hi Jeff,

I will get those drawings mailed out to you over the weekend.  The stamped numbers were exactly opposite of where the really went.  So pipe 1 started on the timing side and pipe 4 went on the alternator side.  I think they were probably just bin numbers so whoever packed the box made sure pipes 1 through 4 were there.  On the Emgos: I tried to get them to fit as they are really nice copies of the real Dunstall Decibel silencers but I couldn't get them over the outlet pipes.  I know Emgo says they fit over 1 3/4" pipes but mine didn't.  Its worth a shot as they are only $100 for the pair and you can resell them for what you bought them for.  I ended up getting real Dunstall Decibel silencers which fit no problem.

Scott,
I should have taken your advice and not ordered the Emgo Dunstall replicas.... they are going to require some sort of adapter to get them to work, but even so, that will add lenght to the exhaust and put the end of the pipes out past the rear wheel and the mounting brackets that I had made up.
It is looking like the dunstall replicas from the UK may be the way to go (red tip).
Is their only one source for these pipes (red tip)?
The mounting plates turned out nice I created a CAD file of the templates and had them made with a C&C water jet.

Hi Jeff,
The Emgos are junk anyway.  You should be able to resell them for what you bought them for.  I think the only place to get the red end ones is in England.  They are also on ebay as the Yamaha ones but I think they all come from the same place.  Post some pics of the plates you had made.
