Why won't my clutch engage? And why so stiff?
« on: April 15, 2012, 05:04:42 PM »
I'm doing a 750 rebuild and my clutch was frozen. The plates were not rusted together but they did have some vacuum to each other. The clutch does not engage when I put it all back together (even though I still need to replace the friction discs). I don't see how it possibly could since there is a 1/4" gap between the stack of discs and the pressure plate even when they are as close as possible together. Am I missing something?

Rotate the pressure plate 90 degrees and see if it all goes together flush then.

Hint: it will.

DOH!  :D :D

Follow up question -

After putting it back together the clutch feels SUPER STIFF to disengage, just trying to yank on the lever right there. Only way I could even get it to move was by prying on it quite hard (verifying it was free). I could not see this being right, you would need kung fu grip to work the clutch lever. Worn out springs or what? I measured them each at very close to 31.75mm which is in spec to the minimum of 30.5mm....

Will worn out discs and plates effect this at all? Also how do I know when I should replace my plates too? I'm banking on replacing the friction disks during this rebuild but to save some buck I'd use the plates still if I could. They're all pretty smooth as far as I could tell
