Steering dampner - Anyone installed one

Just seeing if anyone has ever installed a steering dampner/stabilizer and what type of mounts did you use in doing so.

Here's one. The fork mount came from Storz but Shindy and others make them. You're going to have weld a mount ing point to the frame or make some type of bracket. The old ones(frame mounts) were very poor quality and flexed to the point where they looked like they would snap

How did you mount to the fork.  I found this online...

Yes...that'll work. It also gives you more flexibility for mounting the damper. I originally had a "Kawasaki" type damper and mounted it to the lower triple clamp in a threaded hole that is on 750's.

I don't suppose there are options for sub-$100 stabilizers available?  What kind are you guys using?  Purchased new - and from where?

Thanks!

I gotta get myself one of these.
Not even for the function , but to put even more fear into the sportbike guys around here.
They allready think my bike is evil, imagine if I pulled in with a dampener on the thing !  ;D

Mike, I've got one of those Z1 dampers mounted to the lower clamp just like you had. Did it work OK for you?

Z1 enterprises lists the old "Kawasaki type" damper new for around $70, I think. Lots of used stuff on Ebay.

Why? Just from its looks or have they ridden it?

A sportbike rider near me took mine out for a spin and return ashen-faced.  He jumped off and said it scared the #$%* out of him.  I think his exact words were: "I dunno how you ride that thing.  No brakes, scary handling, fast steering, top heavy and just f**kin' SCARY MAN!!!!  Balls man, you got balls."

Sean....worked OK for me. I changed to the current unit after installing the oil cooler as the Kawasaki type intefered with the cooler.

For you guys that have done it.
Here's an Ebay search for GSXR steering dampner
What do you guys see there that you would jump on to start again if you had to?  I'm not afraid to mod something, just a heads up on where to start would be great. I want one!

Those GSXR units are not adjustable in regard to damping....I'd look at something else.

Mainly from the looks , and now with the open 4 into 1 the sound  8)
Allot of guys in and around the chicago area are afraid of older bikes and cars because they cant tell the difference from a pile to a racebike LOOKING like a pile (as my bike has been classified 4 some reason)

Adding a dampener to my "race bike" will just put that much more fear into them, which I am all about... ;D

The type damper I have used for 30 plus years is the same one that the Kawasaki H1's or H2's used. It's a NHK #ODM500 from Pro-Flo. The last one I bought was 59.95 in 2003.

A further note on dampers, these CB's are not evil handling bikes and the way most people ride there is no need for one. If however you've ridden off a track somewhere in a full out tank slapper then the need increases. Who including myself nowadays rides on the edge like that. For those who can't resist the NHK is a good inexpensive unit, seven way adjustable. (I usually set it to three or four clicks)

I welded a tab to the frame to accept one end and at the other just threaded a 8mm stud into the hole on the underside of the steering stem.

Thanks for the link petersan :)

Bwaller, what kind of cooler do you have? I've got the same damper mounted in the same place as you but I'm not sure it will clear the Derail cooler I'm planning to use (which I haven't purchased yet).
