You know you live in a ghetto when..
« on: April 17, 2012, 11:48:41 AM »
It's been a rough year in my hood.  Normally a decent neighborhood but I just don't know anymore.  Here's a list of the #$%* I've dealt with in the past 12 months
-Last night someone torched a stolen car in my alley.
- my female tenant was flat out sucker punched by some random guy walking past
- a random guy was jerking off in front of my neighbors wife.
- some mouth breathers couldn't figure out how to unlatch my gate to trespass so they kicked thru it and then thru the fence at the back

What would you do?

but really, with the economy and whatnot, a lot of neighborhoods have gotten worse.  now, if all that stuff happened on my block, there would be some batman-style #$%* going down.

hard to say what to do.  if people move out because of it, it only gets worse.  start a blockwatch or something?  i know they're pretty ineffective, but at least people might think twice.  also, maybe leave  used targets nailed to phone poles or something.  good grouping scares off thugs.

the same thing happened in a neighborhood here and some of the residents started to plant flowers clean up around the yards painted their houses with fresh paint, and lights use nice bright lights when the lights get turned on the cockroaches run and hide. if you can get some of the more respectful neighbors to that eventually the trash will disappear.and you'll have a nice neighborhood this is one of the many reasons i live in the country.i do take care of some buildings on the bad side of town and when i started to clean them up real good and kept the paint up to date. things started to get better. it's amazing how well doing stuff like that works.

I lived in New Haven, one of the most gang infested, ghetto fabulous places in the U.S.I got so used to crime and anger that it became commonplace,Had 3 motorcycles stolen, cars broken into Numreous times, robbed by 10 yr olds with guns,Dog stolen at gunpoint,When I moved to bellingham where it is VERY white and nice I didnt know how to react to people.I'm from the Bronx where we wave with a middle finger and every other word is F*ck.West coast and East coast are like two different countries. Also,I've been to some "scary' parts of vancouver and B.C.and I would still feel safe compared to the sh*t I'm used to.Sucks though,You are right you're only one man,tis a F'd up society we live in.

Yeah, this stuff happens all over.  Oddly enough my truck has never been broke into, the Healey was never messed with and nobody has tried anything with the CB.   I even keep a dummy lawnmower outside and it has yet to go missing.  My problem is location, im situated on a feeder route to our rapid transit system, which would explain why i get so much unlikeable traffic.  Skin color here doesnt factor in, my area is mainly white.  Meth and rapid transit is the problem.  The provincial term for our transit is 'skytrain' but 'crimetrain' is more like it.  It is both a blessing and curse.

That's hilarious, move to the states, none of that here at all.

I'm always visiting somewhere when I'm around trains, but haven't considered this drawback of living near them.

I know there are certain stops you should avoid on CHicago's lines, especially late at night, and I overhear some interesting talk about gangland on the trains.

Yeah, "scary" parts of Vancouver I have been to are cakewalks compared to some of the places I had to work in East St. Louis and North St. Louis. Cakewalk.

Far enough so the city doesn't follow.  We live in the "inner ring"suburbs of Detroit.  The ghetto rats have moved out here in droves and brought the loud violent lifestyle with them.  Since you can buy a house for the price of a cheap used car, the out of state slum landlords have been buying up places and renting them to anyone.  We have a fight going on about getting the city to enforce it's so called rental ordinances.  We have a house across the street that was rented out while it was still being worked on.  No inspections, and it turns out there is no heat in the house.  Cops have been out on domestic violence calls already.  A neighborhood bar changed hands recently and the first night it was open there was a drive by shooting.  Sure not the city I remember growing up in.

I have three dogs, they help out where they can.  As far as moving out of the city its not really an option.  My area is considered a suburb of Vancouver and house prices here are ridiculous.   To buy a modest home, 3 bed/bath in a nice qiuet area a few blocks from here will run @800k.  I am nearing completion of renovations on this place which i purchased for 430k.  I looked at house prices in Michigan, crazy!

The nice thing about the suck a$$ economy is if you lived in the ghetto before, all the middle class are moving into your hood. I went from little Mexico to a "trendy" area to live in.

Choice here is move into the city where EMS could take 45 minutes to arrive, if at all, police station houses that close at 8pm, little other city services.  Or stay here.  Sort of like being condemed and given the option of being hung or shot.  Home is paid for so moving and selling for next to nothing is not a option.

I feel for you. Our services are still somewhat effective and intact.  From the moment the car was lit, the ordeal was done in 15 min; Fire put out and evidence towed away.  I guess I will count my blessings

A friend of mine lives in a rough neighborhood called Wilkinsburg in Pittsburgh and has been reprimanded by the police chief for locking addicts in his garage when he discovered them smoking crack after breaking in, and also tied a guy up with jumper cables and beat the snot out of him for trying to sell my buddy some stolen stereos. The police were amused by the vigilante justice but warned him that it would ultimately lead to trouble for he and his family.

Haven't you heard? We all carry guns here.... ;)

Big part of it. In Virginia it is pretty safe to asume there is a gun in every house. Keeps breaking and entering low IMO.

Yup, Texas is full of guns too.  No questions, shoot em, drag em into the house!

Heck, a few years ago a tow truck driver repo'd a car that was in the guys driveway.  The owner shot and killed the repo guy, got away with it.  An old law farm type law.

Forgot to add, a co-worker of mine was really excited when her Russian made scope arrived from Russia for her AK47 last week.

I live on the near-East side of Indianapolis.  While my neighborhood isn't that bad by any means, the area between here and downtown is a bit rough and sometimes the rif raf migrates through here.  We did recently have a murder in the house behind us across the alley, but it was a domestic thing involving two drunk friends....not that it makes murder any less violent, but it wasn't a home invasion or something of that sort at least.

I think the key to avoiding crime in the hood is having an active neighborhood association....or at least communicating with your neighbors and keeping an eye out for each other.  If we see anything at all....even someone parked in their car on our street that we don't know or acting suspicious, we call the cops immediately and they come check it out.  The cops here have told us on a number of occasions that they don't mind checking things out at all and to call anytime....so we do.  I happen to live adjacent to a few retired couples who know EVERYTHING that happens in the neighborhood during the day, so that is really helpful.

Our property hasn't been messed with (knock on wood) and I think that's because of our "fort knox" attitude.  The back yard is surrounded by privacy fence and all gates are always locked.  All house doors are bolted locked and we keep the glass storm doors locked even when we are home.

Another thing we have is LOTS of lights outside and they are on all night (photo sensors so they go off at dawn).  Each side of the house is lit up with at least one flood light and the back yard has three flood lights.  The back of the garage on the alley side has two flood lights.  They are flourescent floods so they don't use alot of power.  Overkill?....probably.....but studies say that properties that are well lit are less likely to be burglarized.  I tend to believe that.

Finally, we recently put in a four-channel DVR camera system.  All entrances are covered and there is one facing the garage doors on the alley side.  A funny story.....one night I walked by the monitor showing the cameras (it's down in the basement) and saw something in front of our garage doors.....I rewound the DVR and watched a car pull right up next to our garage, shut off its lights, and sit for a time.....then toss something out the window and drive off.  Of course I had to go out and see what it was.....

....it was a purple sweatshirt with Eyore (Disney) on it....and it was covered in jizz.  Nice.   ::)
