« on: April 18, 2012, 04:13:53 PM »
Need a new chain for my build. I have  75' CB550.  I heard the size I need a 530x100.  Please correct me if Im wrong.  Also ppl have been saying I need a non-o ring chain.  Any luck with chains out there  I dont mind spending the money to have one that wont blow into my crankcase. lol

What's wrong with an o ring chain? All I know is you shouldn't really use a clip link for the chain, rivet is a lot better.

O-rings chains for a 550 are a no-go.  Not enough clearance between the drive sprocket and the cases/oil seal.

I get my chain from here:

I just ordered one from Forward Powersports on ebay. Under $30. free shipping. They sell 'em in various colors if that matters to you.

I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

It is a 530 chain with 100 links I don't know how many links a 550 bike needs. Better to long than to short

530 is the chain pitch, which equates to 5/8".  100 is the number of links.  Links will always be represented as an even number and you can always buy a longer chain than needed and remove as much as needed to get the length required for your bike.  A chain breaker that you can buy at most motorcycle accessory shops works well for this, but you can also grind off the head of a link pin with a dremel and shorten it that way.  A breaker just forces the pin through the hole without cutting off the head.

Alright thanks a bunch guys, I appreciate it. Any other brands out there you guys recommend. I heard the pre stretched and self oiled are the best.  People keep telling me about Diamond non-oring chains.

100 links should fit a CB550 perfect unless the sprockets have been changed out from stock. There is nothing wrong with a clip link chain just make sure the clip link has been installed properly.

500 means 5/8 pitch the 30 indicates 3/8 width of sprocket, 20 is 1/4 inch sprocket.
