clutch/ gear question please help!
« on: June 08, 2006, 07:59:34 AM »
Over the winter I took the engine apart to inspect and replace any worn parts on my 76 550f.  Yesterday i finally got the engine back together, before I start it I thought I would pull the clutch lever and go through the gears and make sure I was not in gear when I pressed the start button.  The problem I have is I am not able to get in all 5 gears. When I pull the clutch lever I can shift and I can find neutral but i am not able to shift into all 5 gears. I think I can get into 1 and second, but not really sure.  Does the engine have to be on  for me to go through the gears, or is it just an adjustment problem.  Hopefully I am explaning this properly.  I am pretty sure everything was installed properly at least according to the shop manual.

The gear dogs won't engage unless they are aligned.  Try rotating the output shaft or rocking it back & forth to get other gears. If the engine is not running it won't matter if the clutch is engaged or not.  If you still can't get the upper gears, there's a problem to solve.
