anyone use a battery tender on there cb?
« on: April 18, 2012, 07:06:04 PM »
Brand new battery tender, and a newer battery that been off the bike for 6 months now.  I hooked it up and came back out in 3hrs to check on it, and its was making a sizzling bubble noise.  Took it off due to feeling like this is not correct.  12v battery tender, and 12 v batt.  where did I go wrong..? Is my batt trashed now.  I dont get it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Matt

it should be a low amp battery charger. like 1.5 amps or something like that. Regular 12v car ones have too many amps

I wouldn't assume the battery is junk. I'd get a low amp charger and try again. Walmart has them cheap.

Damn, thought I was being slick..lol  Could I check my levels on the batt and throw some distilled water in there to save it, or is it not even worth it?

As long as you didn't boil any of the cells in the battery dry, you should be fine.

I'm a sealed agm man myself, but typically you can ad distilled water. Start at the lower level because it will rise.

Battery tender Jr. is what I have been using for the last 5 years.  The battery is always connected to it even in winter.  Their $20 on ebay and their excellent with a good warranty. They will extend the life of a battery another year or so.  Your bike will always have a good and fully charged battery for better starts etc.  I love it.

^^I use the same Deltran tender as above.  Have had no problems with it but yes, even with that Deltran
the water in my battery will bubble while charging.

I've had good luck with my schauer battery charger i leave it on all winter it will charge the battery and load it like it is being used and recharge it again 19.95 walmart.let yours set for a day then put a little distilled water in yours like others suggested.you should be alright.when i did auto electric it happened all the time.very rare did it mess up a battery.

Telling us you have a battery tender is like telling us you have a motorcycle.  There are lots of different types, brands, and designs.  But, if it was cheap, you may have just bought a name descriptor rather than a quality tool.

"There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey."

"It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better."

I got mine at TSC, they have a sale every so often. One of the smart ones for $20. Money well spent, it kept the battery happy all winter, I use it to charge my diesel Kubota with dead rectifier and overall works great.

6 months is too long to have been out of service & not recharged. A conventional lead/acid battery, fully charged can sit on a shelf for maybe up to 3 months before it requires recharging. By 6 months, sulphation (sulfation) would have occured. Crystals form on the plates and form an insulator if you like & reduce the chance of charging the battery at all. Some chargers have multi stage programs which will attempt to break down the sulphation, however they cost a lot more than a regular charger/tender.

Get a new battery & keep it healthy all year long, don't let it sit there & self discharge.

My brand new battery gurgles when you get it hot. (From trying to start a bike that wasn't getting fuel for too long.) I keep it on a tender and its fine.

Yeah, mine always do that. If its a "Battery Tender" brand battery tender, its my understanding that they have circuitry in them to keep them from overcharging a battery. You can hook them up and leave them all winter. Untended. AS said, be sure its topped off, not overfilled, and should be fine IMO.

I had a miracle happen. My Goldwing had a Westco battery which I left on the Battery Tender every winter. In summer when I was riding the 750's a lot I put it on the Tender too. That Westco battery was going on 9 years and I decided to change it out just so I would not get stranded. I could not see pushing my luck further than the time this battery had already given me. If you can keep them from sulfating you will get good life out of a good battery.

I use a Battery Tender Jr. as well. I just hook it to each of my bikes for 24 hours or so, once per month in the winter. Keeps 'em all ready to go. I have heard of concerns about leaving a tender on a bike constantly, in regards to lightning or power spikes. A surge protector may be of some help there. Unhooking the battery cable from the bike in the winter would probably be the safest option.

From my experiences in frying my new Yuasa battery that wasn't even a year old, go with a smart tender. One that fully charges the battery then automatically goes into trickle mode. I had a 1 amp motorcycle battery charger I left on all winter and it pretty much boiled the fluid right out of the battery. I refilled and recharged it but it lasted a couple of days before it died again. it was toast. My wife got me a $150 gift card to the local cycle shop so a nice smart tender and some gortex riding gloves are on my list.

Sorry about your trouble. Live and learn. Here is a good place to start learning. Lots of other things to read about on this site about battries.

Here is another one.

http://batterytender.com/resources/battery-basics.htm

TT told me about this charger when I was in the market for one. I have been happy with it. I do think I go a little overboard I now have 5 chargers some big ones for different battries. My wife has to slow me down every once in a while ;D

Same here plus I'll hook it up while I'm working on something else on the bike.
