Accolay - I'll wait for your post. So I'll leave here Sunday or Monday. We can exchange phone #s and other particulars via PM. That's a lot of miles for 2 days. Are you sure you can do it?

Duanob, Flybox1 - can one of you get Lefty back to me?

tlbranth I sent you a PM to try and meet up tomorrow. Or I can pop him in the mail, I could do 2 day from work. Get back to me with your schedule and we can get lizard guy back to you for the trip east. I am out of town friday through monday.

Jeez Fly, you're working a long day today!

For anybody else GZ will be doing Backfire Moto Night tonight in Ballard, WA at the 2-Bit Saloon. Be there.

Terry- If we're still on, I just found someone to work my Sunday night shift. I can meet you on Monday night in Missoula, MT. I guess we can take this to PM if this is still a go with your schedule.

You guys might want to keep your plans public, just in case someone decides to join along the way?

Exactly, Terry. Keep the personal info to personal messages, and make the general plan public. I've noticed several times both years where plans were made privately, and no one else knew what was going on. We do have members in Montana; maybe they will see this and realize they can join in without doing an iron butt. ;D

Here's my plan. The first two days include heavy riding. And when I say ride, I do mean ride, because I have a lot of ground to cover during this portion :)

Day One Sunday July 22nd: I'm leaving Minneapolis early afternoon and will make it to Dickinson, ND on the first day via I-94.

Day Two, Monday, July 23rd on to Missoula again on I-94/I-90. Interstate to save time in order to meet for hand-off.

Next three days are more up in the air. Southish/Eastish towards Lincoln/Omaha, NE for handoff. Butt will probably be a little sore and will make more stops, but will still have to ride. Must be in Minneapolis on Friday night. Maybe through Yellowstone. Maybe stop at Devils Tower. Maybe Black Hills. Maybe through Nebraska Sand Hills

If there is anybody who wants to ride a bit of the way with me, feel free. I have not figured out where I'm going to stay yet, but I do like camping and it's cheap.

Hey accolay, thanks for posting your tentative schedule.  A route through the sandhills of NE is awesome.
Lake McConaughy, outside of Ogallala off I-80 is a 20+ mile long, white sand beach lake!  Beautiful spot to stop and camp.

Ok...back to schedule.  Unfortunately it doesn't seem to match up with days I've got off.

Here's how it would work out for me:
Leave Friday or Sat a.m. (20th or 21st).  I-90 to Spearfish, SD, about 8 hrs.
Spearfish SD to Missoula MT, another 8 hrs.
Depending on if I left either Friday or Sat. a.m. I'd be in Missoula, either Sat. evening or Sun. evening.
I'd like to roll out of Missoula, MT, Monday morning 7-23.  That give me 2 8 hr days to get home tues night the 24th.

Did 2 comparison maps, and it seems you are running the most efficient route for you, which is NW out of Minneapolis, up to I-94.
My route out of Omaha, on I-90 to Spearfish SD, would put us both meeting in Billings somewhere.

I see our schedules don't quite mesh up.
***Technically....I need to be back to Omaha on Tues night the 24th.  Need to work Wedn. a.m. the 25th.
Might be able to swing getting off on Wedn., which would give us 1 more day to ride.  But getting Wedn off will be a long shot, especially
with taking time off again for Rockerbox.

The way it looks, is that the 5 days I've got off and can get started Friday 7-20, you're not available until afternoon of Sunday 7-22.
And we'd end up riding solo for a lot of the trip.

Seems like its going to be a super tight run for you accolay.
Even though going 'Brown' is not 1st option....it is an option.  Nothing worse than feeling cramped for time on a road trip.
Add in time for a possible mechanical, flat tire, even just basic maintenance issues, and you're behind schedule in a big way, you know?
Come on!  We're burning daylight!

GZ is in my hands at the moment. I plan on dropping him off to tlbranth at lunch today and the rest will be up to him. God Speed! You guys are covering a hell of a lot of ground in a short amount of time. But thanks for keeping the relay alive and going.....

Accolay, I think you've scheduled too much for the 2 days to Missoula. Since you have 6 days, I think you might want to consider taking 3 each way.
There's a KOA in Missoula but KOA's aren't really cheap and this one's pretty tightly packed and, of course, noisy. With just a small bike, you might want to just scoot off into the woods a bit and camp by yourself.

Accolay - I'm worried you're biting off too much for the first 2 days. Why don't we move the handoff point to Butte instead of Missoula. That'd give you 100 or so less miles. Let me know if you're good with that.

tlbranth:  Im thinking the same thing!  Especially since accolay, you're leaving in afternoon on Sunday, that puts a lot of your 1st day miles @ dark.

Here's a couple things that just happened on my end.  Last night my Cb650 stator decided to stop charging.  Ive already got another stator and rotor on the shelf.  (owned lots of 650's....they ALL blow a stator and/or rotor).
If I can get it all changed out tonight, I'll be ready to roll 1st thing in the morning.
If all does not go well, I am off work Friday, so will get it done and be ready to roll Sat. a.m.
(Side note:  if there is complete stator / rotor install failure....which sometimes happens....I've got a friend who will let me borrow his CX500 for the trip.  Not sure how the sohc diehards will approve or not.  I'll let you all hash that out.)
Either way.  I'm 100% ready to go.  With my 650, or the CX.

I mention this, because, I can leave earlier than accolay, and could do the initial handoff / pick-up of GZ somewhere in MT.
Its two 9 hr days for me, from Omaha to Missoula.  Pick GZ up evening of the 22nd or morning of the 23rd.

Then meet accolay somewhere along the route back home, and the two of us could ride together as far as Sioux Falls SD, before splitting off.
He could keep GZ in MN, and do a hand-off @ Rockerbox.
Come on!  We're burning daylight!

As long as everyone doesn't have a fit, if I have to ride a CX500 to come get GZ.  Maybe the HTTA (Honda Transverse Twin Association) will be our 'brother group'!  :)  Like some towns have a 'sister city'.
If this is a problem...speak up.  Accolay can still do the pick-up a day or so later.

Ok...back to task @ hand  ....that puts me in touch with tlbranth for the actual swap.
Assuming the meet point of Butte, will remain the same?

Ive decided to leave Omaha, NE early sat. a.m.  If the trip goes well, it puts me in Butte, Sunday evening the 22nd.

Will camp 1st night saturday night, and then grab a hotel for sunday evening in Butte.

One of the goals of this relay, besides getting actual face time with like minded SOHC4 nut jobs er, I mean enthusiasts is to have GZ ride thru as many states/provinces as possible.  Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba seem a bridge too far for this year. But what about Wyoming, the Dakotas, Iowa and Minnesota?   Surely the trip back from Montana will touch many of them. But Is it possible to touch them all?  I'm assuming no.

Those on the road need to choose the safest, most fun route possible, no one should question that.  If the opportunity to roll thru one of the dangling states presents itself, then that would be AWESOME!!  But at the same point, some Hurculean riding is taking place here so those who stood up to make this happen call the shots!  If the relay misses your particular burg, then stand up and see what YOU can do to make it happen!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Hey tlbranth: Just saw your message about when you can be in Butte.  Totally understand!

I'm ready to go, and can leave in the morning.
Buuuuuut... I need to leave Butte, Monday morning, on my way back to Omaha.  Need to be back Tuesday night, to make it to work on Wedns.  (Took extra time off for Rockerbox in 2 weeks, and can't swing an extra day for traveling for this trip).
Thats leaves me out for the hand-off from tlbranth.

Sooooo...its back in the hands of accolay....which we kind of agreed was a bit ambitious, regarding his travel schedule, traveling solo @ night, etc.

Maybe we end up going 'brown' and accolay holds on to GZ until RockerBox?
Come on!  We're burning daylight!
