ANZAC day
« on: April 23, 2012, 07:00:53 PM »
24th of April here, poppy day, tomorrow we remember those brave people who have gone before us, the birth of our country.
Proud to be KIWI, privileged to call Australians friends.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Amen, Scunny, to all who've gone before.  Don't forget us Canadians & our Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, the author of that beloved poem from the "Great War".  Our "poppy day" is Nov 11, but we wish you long & peaceful lives on your ANZAC day.  I just visited the Normandy D-Day beaches last week for the first time & it was a moving experience, our debt to the previous generations is huge.

My dear departed father (ww ii) sent me to buy a 'buddy poppy' from a veteran in front of a post office one day.   We were about 800 miles from home and just a buck.

I had never heard of such of a thing, but prolly still have the thing somewhere.  It might be time to throw it out and buy an new one, if I can find it. Or if I even know where to buy another one.

What is the deal with poppys, and what is recommended mileage between poppys?

Isn't ANZAK a new allergy drug?  For springtime pollens?  Can you send a couple?

Huh?

Fiddy, "ANZAC" stands for "Australia and New Zealand Army Corps", and here in Oz (and I imagine also in the land of the long white cloud) this word evokes passionate images of heroism, self sacrifice, mateship and national pride, in the minds of all of us who enjoy the freedoms that our ANZAC forebears fought and died for.

I'm glad that you have some knowledge of the symbolism of the Poppy, your father certainly did, and he may well have visited Flanders Field and experienced similar emotions to those that led Colonel McCrae to write the immortal poem in a previous "War to end all Wars",  that holds such significance in the ANZAC identity.

Have a good one mate, and spare a thought for those who like your dad, thought that some things were important enough to risk everything for. Cheers, Terry.  ;)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Terry terry terry. Mate you're gonna have to change your signature, the story of the dog. Every time I read it I tear up.   :(
I know you've been using it for a while and has special meaning for you, but it's especially very poignant at this time of the year eh.
Have a good Anzac day mate.

Thanks for reminding us Scunny, for me obviously it's Nov 11 but I will remember them, solemn days for all of us, my family lost one and saw the effects of others both in survivors and dead, to think that I was bummed out as a kid because I couldn't go to WW2 or Korea (what a dummy, I was). The cream of our young men destroyed. Sad.

As a child there was always a plastic poppy attached to the rearview mirror of my parents cars.

I live in Fayetteville NC home of the 82nd airborne and I thank the ANZACS on their day for standing with the free world against tyranny.  My father fought in WWII in the battle that turned back the Japanese assault on Australia and he admired the ANZACS for their loyalty and courage.
