My 76 super sport got awful mileage, a PO had drilled the jets and the float levels were very high.

I bought a 1970 750KO new in April 1970. 38mpg around town and low 40's on the highway. 100% stock and I rode it Hard.

Which is why I think there's a problem!

My 76 super sport got awful mileage, a PO had drilled the jets and the float levels were very high.

Though I've been trying to do most of the work myself, for various reasons, I sourced this batch of work to the cb750 "expert" in the Bronx. I suppose it is an assumption that he would set the floats correctly and do the jets properly, and I haven't taken them apart since I got the bike back two weeks ago. But gosh, this fellow came highly recommended and his whole shop was full of cb750s, cb550s, etc... like 40 or 50 of them. So I'm assuming he has a clue!

So now, in researching other possible causes of crap mileage, three culprits stand out.

1. leak: I don't see it. Well, not at the petcock, and I turn it off when I'm not riding.

2. timing: Could this bamboozle my mpg's this badly?

3. compression: boy I hope it's not this. This engine only has <35,000 miles on it and it seems to have plenty of oomph to it. I don't know how it was taken care of in the forty years before I got it though and I guess even a CB750 needs a LITTLE love over the years.

Am I missing any other suspects?

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

165 miles minimum combined city/highway to reserve on a K7 and the tank never gets the maximum top up, likely get another quart in there. I am not easy on the throttle either. I'm sure I could milk 200 miles out of an absolutely full tank till it was dry.

I have done around 300km on one tank, reserve at around 230km.  0.6L/10km at std road speed 80-120km/h
Not racing twisting throttle all the time when reserve comes at 150km.

Nope. some perhaps. But many are bikes he fixed up and are for sale:

I'm guessing there are a few thousand CBs in this town, so 40-50 in one specialty honda shop is actually not that crazy.

Different years have different sized fuel tanks, half a gallon difference (+10%) in some cases.

my new to me 1974 cb750 with 120 main jets went 140 miles before sputtering for reserve. that's 46.666mpg if a full tank holds 3 gallons above the 2 outlet petcock pipe.

K2 with pods I hit reserve about 125 miles. I get 35mpg usually but last fill was 40 so 35-40. When I woke up my bike from a long nap I found that there was no standpipe in the tank. The tank OEM tank and side covers were stolen in the middle 70's and my dad bought this tank used. I never had the petcock off once until recently. Would have been a nasty surprise had I ever went to hit "reserve" LOL. Over the years I have ridden it before I knew that I just got gas around 125 miles on the trip odo.
