Crankcase halves - Hondabond question.
« on: April 19, 2012, 01:04:11 PM »
Hi Folks,

I will be joining the case halves soon.  Does Honda want me to apply Hondabond to the entire mating surface of the case halves, or just the outside perimeter?  The manual isn't very specific and I don't want to apply more than necessary for obvious reasons.

Thanks again!

I did all mating surfaces. THere was previous bonding agent on all mating surfaces so I followed suit.

A little bit of Hondabond squeezed in will hang on to the case half and not float away in the oil. Just don't get too crazy with it. I use it on the aluminum rear end cover on my dragster, I had to bop it pretty good to get it apart this AM. Good stit.

I will be doing this in the near future;I've been following a thread where a man applied it directly w/ a plastic credit card type of squeegee and put it on that way. That way it won't be so thick that it squeezes into the inner case and possibly clogs areas you wouldn't want.Prep is the main thing...and then being prepared w/ both halves & knock pins where you know it will seal tight...;this is from reading his thread.

When I do it I'll install it dry first to make sure the case halves mate tightly all the way around..and then do it for real.

when the cases are bare,i very gently draw file over the entire surfaces, lightly steel wool over and blow with compressed air clean, turpentine or spirit clean then its good to go.

Dave..do you do that so that the case sealer will stick well to the surfaces ?

yes,the file and steel wool make sure there are no burrs etc,the turps make sure the sealant will stick with no oil/grease film, everyone has their own way, just be sure its all real clean.
