Well it's true that I'm an Ebay-aholic with 331 feedback points and over 400 transactions, and I often wonder where I'd be without the "Evil Bay", ha ha!
Trouble of course, reading some of these posts, is that we've sunk into an "Ebay mentality" where we judge the value of everything based on what we've seen it go for on Ebay. Just because a seller is selling chrome gauge covers on Ebay for $14.99 doesn't mean that they're only worth $14.99 and that 60-odd bucks is a rip, as I said, I paid $50.00 for a set in 1983 from a bike shop, and at the time (long before Ebay) thought that was quite reasonable.
I think that a more accurate method of assessing somethings worth would be to try to remember what the item was worth way back then, and how much you were getting in your pay packet then, and calculate it as a percentage of your pay, and then work out what that cost would equate to now.
I've got a NOS 836CC big bore kit at home in a box, I paid $39.00 for it on Ebay because the other bidders didn't spot it, the kit was sold as an "Action Fours" kit, and I believe also under the "RC" brand, very good quality items, each piston's weight marked on the crowns etc, and the original price tag was $189.99, probably from the late 1970's or early 1980's. Back then I was lucky if I earned much more than $100.00 per week, so the kit was pretty expensive. Now a new kit costs around 400 bucks, but that's ok, I earn (or at least I get paid) over $1000.00 per week, so really, they're pretty cheap now, compared to what they cost back then.
While I understand that everything seems to be judged now on what it's worth on Ebay, in reality, it may be a much different case. Cheers, Terry.
