New GL1000 for my pops
« on: April 21, 2012, 11:58:26 AM »
I found this on Craigslist for $250.  The engine turns, but the brakes are both bad.  I think it mainly needs a good cleaning, but I have to take a look in those cylinders.

I love these bags!

Decent shape for what they are.

I am going to need a new exhaust, as this one has rusted through.  Frame seems to be in good shape.  The engine looks really good.  Gonna be fun!

Yep,  I built a 79 650 for him a while ago and it still needs some stuff. Runs though.  I am going to post it craigslist soon so that I can use that cash to finance the goldwing build.

First year goldwing!  Nice.  I doubt it'll ever reach sandcast or K0 status but I'd love to have one if I had the room.

Alright,  so the front master is toast.  I got the c clip out, but it is rusted together.  I am going to pull apart the calipers, but I can see exposed piston and it is rusty, so I am worried about the pitting.  If anyone has a line on calipers or master cylinders (front and rear) let me know.  Also the forks are pretty nasty, and I may need new fork tubes.  Let me know if you have any of that laying around, please.

I did get some polish on the side covers and the "tank" sides.  They shined up pretty well.  Got to hit up the saddle bags and the fairing.   I thought I had a windjammer on there, but it is a Pacifico.

randakks.com has an aftermarket master cylinder for the GL1000 which folks seem happy with.  I've also seen some on fleaBay of a different make.

fleaBay of course has used masters and the whole bunch.

I believe I remember someone on ngwclub.com selling stainless steel replacement caliper pistons.

There's lots of rebuild parts out there for short money and it's a fairly easy brake system to do.

Thank you!  I just joined over there.  That's perfect.  Every other wing forum I found was dominated by the later wings.

I have been over on the other forum, i thought I would share here.

So this is what my tank looks like.  The bike has been sitting since 86.  I just took a quick glance before and I can't believe it is this clean.

Well, a little progress, but not much.  I took off the fairing and then removed the gauges in order to get to the ignition switch.

The ignition switch is bad, so I am looking for a new one.

Here is the exhaust, it needs help.  Close up of the tips.

Don't think the header is going to make it...

Used the grease gun trick to get the pistons out of the calipers.

Pistons are not in the greatest of shape.

Some one used vice grips or something on these once before.

Anyone know of a good way to clean these out?

I really don't know if I can save these pistons or if I should get new ones.  I have them soaking a bit right now, but the scoring from the pliers is bothering me.  I got a used set of calipers on the way.

The calipers can be honed, which may clean them sufficiently to use. If not used ones are all over eBay and the NGW for sale section. I am a member too and it is almost as good a site as SOHC4.net.

Another option is to head over to motolane.com, he has a couple of 75-77 GL1000's in his yard. I have bought several parts from him and have found him to be very reasonable price wise.

I have some good condition calipers on the way.

Sand Blasting is fun

So the water pump turns over with the engine and doesn't seem to have any play, so I hope that is good.

Now the bad...

If the look of this is any indication, I think I will have to replace the tensioners. :(

Edit*  looks like this is common with early wings.  Just need to clean it up a bit and put new springs on it.

The radiator looked about the way I expected.  Here is the shot looking in from the bottom.

OK, last pic of sandblasting, but I am having way too much fun with this thing.

New present waiting on my doorstep...  New2U kit!

While messing around in the garage, I was thinking about the rear master, and how badly locked up it is, and then I saw this...

This came with a set of rear sets I was going to put on the cafe.  I think I can fix up a nice little bracket for that thing pretty easily and the resivior is a remote, so I can mount it anywhere. Yes,  I think it will work.  Gotta pull the engine and get the frame in shape first though...

did you get a blasting cabinet like the one I have?  I hope you have a better compressor than mine.

I got the big one from harbor freight.  I have a 5hp 30 gal compressor.  I am using glass, and it seems to do pretty well.
