Hello, New member in iowa
« on: April 22, 2012, 04:08:52 PM »
Hello all. Just recently picked up my first bike, a cb750k8. Looking forward to making it my own and learning a lot in the process. Is there anyone in the Iowa area that recommends shops / mechanics for the jobs to big for me or to repair things I break. I'm in the market for some carb cleaning, powder coating and painting, that is until I damage something else.

Thanks,

-bstewart151

Hey there, welcome!

I live in Cedar Rapids.  If you'd like, you're welcome over to do most of the work you'll need to do.  If you need some help, that's cool too.  I've got most of what's needed to fix/repair/replace/tune up/modify or whatever.

Carburetors are my specialty.

A K8 was my first road bike, got it back in 1988--loved it.  Now I run between my '72 CB750K2, my KLR 685, and my FJR 1300, depending on the situation.

All the best,

Shane

Welcome to the forum!

I live in Hiawatha, so we are pretty close.

I am riding a CB750F1 that I drug out of a farm shed a few years back.  I have two more non-running (yet) F1s that I picked up the last two years, and a pile of parts that I bought from a guy who was getting out of SOHC4s.

I am still learning lots about these old bikes, most of it is not that difficult if you take your time and consult the forum.

Central Iowa, specifically Iowa Falls.

Shane, thanks for the offer. So far everything is going pretty well, but I may be bugging you if I get into trouble.

here is the most recent photo. I expected my carbs to need work, but from the outside everything looks really clean. guessing someone was in their recently, as one of the hose clamps for the #4 carb to the cylinder was stripped out and the screw was jammed up in the block fins... :-\

hey guys, I'm in Iowa city. If you guys know anyone parting out a 71 cb500 that would be good news for me!  :D

Just picked her up a couple of weeks ago in Des Moines. Shes a little rough, but hopefully will be road worthy in a couple of weeks. Desperately need new tires and want to get some safety issues such as upper triple tree replaced and such.

Wish there was a club here in Iowa City.

Welcome to the forum!

Sorry, devilclown, I don't know of anyone parting out a CB500 now.  I have some CB750 parts that I bought from a couple of guys getting out of motorcycles, I don't know if the 750 triple tree I have will fit your bike.  I have some tires that came in the parts deals that I won't use, I normally buy new tires.  Let me know if you are interested.

Holub,

   Thanks for the reply!

I may be interested in your tires, but would they fit right? I am no tire expert, but I was under the impression the 750's had a wider tire?

Not sure what size tires were on the 500s, have never owned one.  Would have to check to see what sizes I have on the tire/wheel pile!  :-)

Hey my fellow Iowans,

In case you didn't already know, tonight is the first of the season's Thursday night bike nights at McGrath's powersports in Cedar Rapids.

They are located on Center Point Road, between Collins and 42nd, right off 380.

If you see a tall goofy-looking guy standing near a black '72 CB750 (avatar pic) this evening, that's me!

Hope the weather cooperates!
