Exhaust Wrap
« on: May 07, 2012, 08:28:31 am »
I am planning to wrap my exhaust (front half back to mufflers).  How much (feet) do I need?  Any tips?  How do you mount it?  What stops it form unraveling?

wear gloves. wet it.  wrap it tight.
start and finish it with aircraft wire or stainless zip ties to start (@Headers) and finish (@ exhaust).

I just did my 4 into 1 on my 750, and bought a 50'x2" roll and have probably 10 feet left.  I started at the base and went up toward the headers. This way its layered the same directions as shingles or siding. wrap usually comes with ties, but the ones I got suck, ill probably switch to regular bands that tightn with a screwdriver.

I just did this with a 750 4-1 header.  I used 2" wrap and had 100' of it, of which I probably only used 50-60'.  The bike build is still in progress, so I can't comment on how it stands up to riding.

Quick question:  Even though I have mine double-tied on both sides of each wrap, I still worry a little about fraying.  Is it common to use some kind of high-temp glue (or something?) to seal the ends of the wrap to prevent any possibility of fraying?  I think the stainless steel ties should (in theory) prevent fraying, but I'd feel more comfortable if I were able to seal the ends.  The wrap I used seemed to come undone quite easily once you cut it.

Thanks,
Aaron

Wow was that a messy job.  I was not able to wear gloves because I could not feel and pull the wrap correctly.  Two days later my fingernails are still black.  I have the stainless wire ties in place but I am wondering if hose clamps would be more efficient for reducing fray on the muffler side of the wrap.

I make a little "cap" for the ends by bending thin aluminum into a V shape and then crimping down on the wrap.  Stainless, or brass (vintage cool) aircraft safety wire wrapped and tightened in two places will keep it snug.  Sorry no pics, too busy actually building ....... :-)

bit of a hijack but ill do it anyway
my bike leaks oil... a bit more than most....
ive heard that wrap allows it to collect and possibly ignite..
but my muffler is already soaked in caked on oil most of the time and ive never even seen it smoke....
thoughts?
