update on the great ejecting sparkplug....
« on: June 08, 2006, 06:38:09 PM »
hey everyone. i finally got the spark plug hole fixed on the 750. on the recomendation of jeff at z1enterprises i tracked down a set of "timeserts" rather than using a helicoil to fix the stripped out threads. i bought a helicoil kit but didnt have much faith in it (when i looked at it) so i went with the timeserts. the kit was expensive ($165-ouch) but it was easy to use and i have much more confidence in it than the helicoil kit i had. anyway, while i had it apart i:
1."made" a new tailpeice (hacked up a k fender...still in progress)
2. shortened my blinker stalks (rear) and attached them to the very rear of the frame
3. painted my engine (black-it was black at some point and someone had started stripping it and never finished)
4. bought all new hex hardware to replace those damn phillips head screws

hopefully i will have the bike running this weekend-then i guess i will know if the timeserts were worth it. thanks for everyones recomendations. hopefully someitme i will have some pictures for you guys.

Well look at that!  They're distributed in the UK by Wurth (see separate threads on Wurth carb cleaner)

Timeserts are far superior to helicoils.  There are a couple of similar products - one sold through the NAPA chain of automotive parts stores.

Many drag racers will take a head with perfectly good threads in the spark plug holes and put timeserts in - they are far better than stock.

Cost is an issue, they are expensive - plus there is a very finite selection of thread diameters, pitch and length - but where they can be used, especially on a high use thread like a spark plug, there are the only way to go.

There is nothing more frustrating than working on a bike and you remove the spark plug and get a helicoil come out with it - that will NEVER happen with these things.
