Gouged the ring groove on one of my pistons? Destroyed?
« on: April 23, 2012, 09:10:57 PM »
One of my pistons had frozen rings, they developed rust from sitting and were wedged in almost permanent. I soaked the whole piston in pb blaster (cut the can off, the piston fits perfectly inside), but I still had to break the compression rings out of the piston with a screwdriver in about 6 pieces each. After I got them out I used the screw driver to try to clean up some of the gunk out of the grooves and inadvertently not realizing just HOW SOFT the aluminum is I gouged a couple parts of the groove. Now the grooves in the piston are wider than they should be at a couple spots and can be seen in vertical ring play when I insert another ring in there to check.

I ruined it didn't I? I'd run it, it's not that bad, but if I'm going through the trouble of gaskets, rings, honing, valve stem seals, lapping the valvles, I probably should replace the pistons or at least this piston eh?

Hmm, no good. What bike?  I have plenty of 350/400f pistons laying around and I'm sure others have other sizes too.

fyi, in the future, you might try using a piece of one of those broken rings to clean them out.
