Hmmmnn, bicycle talk. I think I might go watch some paint dry...............  ::)
I think they should see your bicycle.

Do you think I should Dan?  They'll probably hate it. Ah what the hell, I love it, but I need a beefier back wheel, I buckled it at 50 MPH recently, coming out of a bend........... ;D

Ha ha, yeah, I did think about putting guards on the chains, but hell, I didn't want Frank or anyone calling me a fag, so I bravely left them off.

I've gotta modify the whole thing again anyway, so I can use the bicycle's gears, I don't know if you guys have seen this jackshaft mod, but you can get a lot of speed out of a bicycle with one engine, so with two, I'm hoping to make mine a lot more dangerous! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The thing I don't quite understand is - given how many amazing motorcycles you have, why are you apparently so intent on dying on a kind of crappy bicycle? ;)

Well I guess it does seem a tad ironic mate, but my cuz and I were going to go to the Aussie Land Speed records "Speed Week" at Lake Gairdner a couple of years ago, we didn't have enough money to build something that was guaranteed to win a record, so we decided that we'd go for a record for the fastest motorised bicycle.

The good thing is that so far it's only cost around 300 bucks for the engines and maybe 50 for the bike, so if we don't break any records, our beer bill will be higher. Sure, we could have used a fancy alloy or carbon fibre framed bike, but those things are too fragile for hanging a couple of engines and all the other bits off, and riding at silly speeds on the salt.

Sadly my cuz's dad died a week before speed week that year, and for the last two years the event has been rained out, but we're hoping that next year will be a go. Lots of work to do though, better carbs, port mods, expansion chambers, and anything else that'll make it go a little faster. My cuz weighs less than half what I do, so I'm hoping that we'll get some serious speed outta this awsomely dangerous thing! ;D

It's pretty rad, good luck at Speed Week!

I'd suggest that you might want to add a bit of frame gusseting and a solid downhill wheelset & some good fresh tires to your list of things to do.

FYI, the back wheel on my commuter bike has more money in it than your whole project.  I know that money does not exactly equal strength/quality, and I'm down with low-buck, but those wheels were just not made for the kinds of stresses they're seeing now.

Decide for yourself. :)

Hmmm, I can see a 440 2stroke snow mobile engine in your future...... If your going to die on that contraption.... Might as well die going really fast...

Ha ha, yep, I think I said in my first post that I need a new back wheel, if you can point me in the direction of somewhere where I can buy stronger wheel/spoke combos I'd appreciate it, I've no interest in bicycles, (over here bicycle riders are a pest to most commuters, and about as popular as the Taliban) so I don't have that knowledge base. Cheers, Terry. ;D

best thread tangent ever.

Terry you should do a build thread on that thing haha. whats the current record for a shady motorized bike? you could probably reduce some weight by taking the brakes off ;D

Hey terry. I have 24inch down hill wheel thats built for jumping off cliffs..... It would gear you down a little. Plus you could then ditch the rear brakes

Thanks guys, the brakes will probably come off when it goes on the salt, I don't think it'll need to be able to stop abruptly? The DLRA rules say that all vehicles have to be fitted with a parachute, and being an old army paratrooper that worries me somewhat, as I'm not sure where I'd install it? Anyway, I'll try a search on down hill wheels and see what I can find. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Put the chute on your back Terry, just make sure you are hanging on tight.... The upside to all this is that you should be able to scratch your toes without bending over..:o ;D ;)

Ha ha, it'd be pretty interesting to pop the chute at 100 MPH Mick, I might be able to start a new extreme sport! ;D

Ha ha, it's awesomely dangerous fun! Oh, and there's some SOHC4 content in it, the layshaft is a CB750 front axle! ;D

Unfortunately Terry, in the USA (well New Jersey at least) This would be highly illegal to the point of being arrested and impounding the bike or moped or whatever you want to call it. Believe me, I've been through it before.

Ha ha, it's pretty illegal here too mate, I doubt if I'd be arrested, but I'd be "in the shiit" if I got caught. When I first built it I was doing a speed test on a main road not far from my house. I was passing cars at around 50 MPH in a 40 MPH zone when a cop car travelling in the opposite direction slowed down and looked like it was taking some interest in me.

I immediately killed both engines and pretended to be pedalling the thing, and casually waved at the occupants (a male and a female cop with rather surprised looks on their faces) as I coasted silently past. They either decided they had something more important to do, or perhaps that I wasn't worth their time, or perhaps they thought that they'd just imagined the whole thing, as they didn't turn around and chase me. After that incident I moved it to my cousin's place in the country, and we only take it out on nice quiet country roads now.

I'll go get it back in a couple of weeks when I buy the jackshaft kit and modify it to fit, but I'll try to stick to the bike paths that run thru the parkland behind my house, it's still frowned on, but not really policed. Cheers, Terry. ;D
