Trying to remove my rear axle from my wheel on my 74 cb750. When I try to pound it out, the brake hub just starts coming off and the axle is stuck. Also I noticed upon hammering on it some smoke starts coming out of the brakes. I knocked it down with brake cleaner but started looking at the brakes. Do these things contain asbestos? I sure hope not. Any advice appreciated

if they are very old shoes they will be asbestos, that smoke is ultra fine dust, youll have to soak the axle with some penetrant spray.

Just about vomited man! One of the pieces that the pads are riding on inside the drum brake is basically all white. Not the brake pad itself. What's up with that? I'm pretty paranoid about even getting near the thing again lol. I'm just about to bag up the wheel and pay a shop "hey buddy, change these brake shoes, fix and clean up the wheel for me"

Probably got water in the hub at some point the aluminum is corroded. Don't freak out about the dust. Wear a dust mask if it worries you. :)

If you see white, shoe probably came off..
Remove swingarm, ends, and pull wheel with axle in it.. then turn on its side, block it up and try loosening.. In some real bad cases they got to be machined out... so take your time, and do it right.

I sometimes have to motivate axles out of drum brakes. The grease/dirt buildup will harden over time and it forms a stiff and gummy film. Just bang it through.

Almost all brake pads in the US had asbestos until 1999. That's why toll booth workers here had the highest exposure to the stuff. Yours very likely have asbestos. Try not to breath it, but rest assured you have breathed a lot more of it than you think, so don't worry about it outright killing you. Spraying oil or water on it will keep the dust down if you are worried about it.

i forgot to stock up on "bendix metal king"disc brake pads for my car when asbestos got banned here in brakes, after a certain date even the shelf stock had to be disposed of,even the best pads now turn my front wheels black in a month.

Hey guys should the rear brake drum just pop off like that when I'm trying to hammer the axle out? My shop manual doesn't really talk bout the rear brake drum removal too much.

Yes the brake hub slides right off.  It will alow you to change the brake shoes without remopvong the entire wheel.
