No spark, now have spark VIDEO!!!
« on: April 22, 2012, 06:47:03 PM »
I installed my new dyna coils with plugs on my 1975 550F.. Followed all the instructions which were #$%*ty... went to Youtube and followed the video. Everything is installed correctly......No spark.... Bike has power.... all wires are hooked up.... Now my lights in the gauges only turn on when I am engaging the clutch... As well as the headlight. It only turns on when I have the clutch engaged. I let go on the clutch and the lights turn off. Also, the high beam light turns on with clutch engaged as well.

I tried the clutch engaged to see if i have spark... No spark.... Am I missing something here? been since last summer since I had the 550 running so I have forgotten if I have a safety switch like some bikes... Pretty sure this thought is a no though....

Any help would be great.

certainly sounds like you have hooked up to the "clutch safety"

Since those coils aren't really new, I would test those first (google it).

Why did you buy those coils, were the stock coils bad? If yes, maybe it's not the coils??

Really sounds to me like you have the clutch safety circuit run to the headlight, which would in turn mean the coils are being grounded out and not sparking.  Revisit your wiring diagram.

Did you meter the black w/ white wire going to your coils?

I'm with Scunny and Thrutheframe on this, somehow you have hooked up to the clutch safety over-ride circuit.
Better check the wires from the clutch swith (up under the lever) and trace them back to where they should go. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I was thinking the two wires that were attached to the clutch handle as well. I trace them and both are inside the headlight bucket and connected to their matching wires. Tonight I will see where they go.

To clarify though- this 75 550f does has a clutch safety override circuit?

That would be the two wires coming from the clutch lever. They should be Green/red and green.

I figured out why I have no spark... I kept looking at the points today as member Mike Kato gave me some advice... Then I noticed two wires tucked underneath the airbox.. Yellow solid and blue solid.  PLugged them in and here she roars for the first time since I tore her down over the winter!!!!
Thanks to all of you gave me clues.. I still need to figure out the wiring.. I hooked up all the wires properly but blew a fuse when hooking up my aftermarket signals.
