really high idle...
« on: June 04, 2008, 06:54:49 AM »
so i just got my 1976 CB550F back up and running.  i did a quick carb clean, but not a total rebuild (so i'm sure that's gonna be your first suggestion) and a bench sync but haven't had time to do a full sync of the carbs.  the problem i'm having is the idle is just racing at the moment.  somewhere in the 4k range and i'm wondering if there is anything you could think of beyond just syncing or a full rebuild would do.

this bike has a GXR pipe on it and pod filters, but i had already tuned to carbs to that set up in the past, so that would hopefully be set.  it's also got an electronic ignition i put in last year, so i didn't mess around with that yet either.

I'm no rocket scientist, but have you turned down the idle screw?

Probably did an incorrect bench sync (with drill bits) and now the throttle slides can't close all the way.

well, i did it with a paper clip, but in a similar fashion to the way it's said to do it in the carb FAQ.

and the idle screw is turned all the way out, not even touching.

Can you verify that the slides are completely closed off?

Are the slides supposed to be all the way closed? I keep reading about using .05 drill bit. I get a racing idle the. And no vacuum in carbs.

Have you checked the over travel stopper is not interfering with the lift CAM by the throttle cables?
